From The Start

Hollywood loves to translate successful musicals into film adaptations, and loves to make money doing it. The Numbers reports that the 2012 adaptation of “Les Miserables” took in $440 million in box office receipts, along with some additional $40 million in DVD sales. Other notable musicals on the big screen include “Mamma Mia!,” “Rent,” “Chicago,” and “The Producers.” Nor are Trey and Matt novices to the movie industry, having produced, directed, or starred in films like “Basketball,” “South Park: The Movie,” and “Team America.”

Book Clubs

Far from the typical Broadway show, “The Book of Mormon” launched onto the stage in 2011, after having been in production for nearly five years. Audiences have proven so eager to attend that the New York Times reported counterfeit tickets have shown up at the box office after an individual digitally scanned and printed fake tickets before selling the dupes on Craigslist. Those who did buy tickets paid several hundred dollars for the premium, sometimes into the thousands for deluxe seats. With record-breaking sales, “The Book of Mormon” has re-invigorated the musical industry.

From The Horses’ Mouth

Despite the success of “Book of Mormon,” Trey and Matt have not been willing to turn the reins over to a Hollywood studio to turn the musical into a feature-length film. Citing a desire to retain creative control, Deseret News reports that the duo will open their own movie studio, a $300 million venture, in order to produce the film and subsequent creations. Trey and Matt, who previously worked with Universal Studios to release “Team America”, announced they preferred their own touch to that of a major studio, and want to be able to adapt the musical as they see fit.

And The Release Date Is…?

There is no word yet on a script, let alone casting or shooting, which means that the film production could still be a few years off. It took Trey and Matt five years between 2006 and 2011 to write, produce, and direct the musical, so it may take another five before they can put it onto the big screen. In the meantime, “The Book of Mormon” continues to sell out at stages across the country, and those who can’t wait for the film can get tickets through Telecharge.com in order to make sure they get the best seats.
