Daft Punk Wins Big at the 56th Annual Grammys & the TRON Concert That Never Was…

Popular masked French DJ duo Daft Punk won album of the year for their “Random Access Memories” at Sunday’s 56th Annual Grammy Awards — and also won record of the year for “Get Lucky” — which they performed with songwriter/singer Pharrell Williams, and music legends Stevie Wonder and Nile Rodgers. Their continued, mounting success begs the question: When are they going to perform in concert again? Well — they almost did for their prior TRON: LEGACY soundtrack album — and it would’ve been spectacular…

This marked Daft Punk’s second only Grammy performance — the first being at the 2008 50th Grammys with rapper Kanye West for “Stronger”.

For the most part, Daft Punk has stayed away from live performances in recent years. Other than their two Grammy performances — they made a surprise appearance during the encore of the French alternative rock band Phoenix’s October 2010 Madison Square Garden concert.

What many do not know is that there were plans for Daft Punk to perform a concert with music from their TRON: LEGACY soundtrack at the World Premiere of the film in Hollywood on December 11, 2010. Concept imagery was created as to how Hollywood Boulevard would’ve been host to a massive and vibrant pyramid design that’s markedly iconic for the duo — housing a platform for Daft Punk to perform from just above the El Capitan Theatre’s marquee. Massive screens would also show the performance along the boulevard, with laser light shows and light cycles permeating the air. People attending the premiere would’ve then entered through a corridor just below the marquee which led them to “The Grid”.

NAU, who was contacted to design the stage, said this about the event: “Disney Special Events — invited us to provide a full design packet for the premiere of TRON: LEGACY that included everything from an iPhone app to guerilla tagging with lasers on international landmarks and luminescent t-shirts. Ultimately they only commissioned the red carpet and concert stage design, which was toned down once a planned concert featuring Daft Punk outside the El Capitan theater did not eventuate.”

Time will tell when Daft Punk will embark on their next tour. Having built even further on their already great success with the recent TRON: LEGACY and “Random Access Memories” albums — there’s clearly a worldwide audience just waiting to “Get Lucky” 😉
