MF-SIDELEFTFULL

The New MUST HAVE for Back to the Future fans is Here!

Great Scott, the future has arrived! The 1:43 Scale Back to the Future Time Machine with Mr. Fusion from Mattel’s Hot Wheels Cult Classic Collection, just like in the movies, picks up right where the original ended. Last year we had a chance to get an advanced release of the Classic Collections original Delorean Time Machine to review and were quite impressed, so to our delight, when the next installment arrived at our offices doorstop over the holidays, a squeal of glee overcame the BTM team. Click ahead for our detailed review and a bunch of fun pictures we took of the newest member of the Hot Wheels vehicle family, the DeLorean from Back to the Future, complete with Mr. Fusion!

Once again a beautifully crafted piece of machinery

Once again a beautifully crafted piece of machinery for the avid collector!

Hot Wheels has done it again!

Hot Wheels has done it again!

Here’s the official verbiage from Hot Wheels about the product;

The iconic Back to the Future Time Machine is the centerpiece of the Back to the Future movie trilogy, which follows the adventures of teenager Marty McFly as he is blasted to both the past and the future in the time machine created by the eccentric Doc Brown. Considered one of the most successful film trilogies in movie history, the films literally changed the future of the adventure movie genre.

First released in 1985 from Academy Award®-winning filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, Back to the Future – and its Time Machine – became an international phenomenon. Our new 1:18th and 1:43rd scale models of this timeless vehicle celebrate its appearances in Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II, complete with Mr. Fusion!

Relive great memories of the past with this perfect replica created by Hot Wheels EliteTM!

Now there’s something interesting to be noted here, Hot Wheels does not brand this version of the vehicle as the “Part II” version since as we all know the Mr.Fusion Home Energy Reactor actually makes its first appearance in the end of Back to the Future, thus the reasoning you’ll still see the regular Back to the Future logo on package.

The way that Mattel has differentiated this product from their previous model is simply by calling this one the “Back to the Future Time Machine with Mr. Fusion”. So when going to purchase this for your own collection, keep this bit of information handy.

Only a slight change in design, but a great next step in the evolution of the infamous time-machine vehicle!

Ok, this may be my only real complaint about the product and I’m going to just get it out of the way. And it has NOTHING to do with the toy itself. My beef (not my Biff), has to once again do with Mattel’s packaging. Upon trying to slowly and safely open the box, even with an exacto knife to get a clean cut thru the tape, the process of then trying to open the side flap to get into the Hot Wheels Elite product, ended with a torn box. Last March I encountered the same issue with the first version of this model’s box. It is so tightly sealed that this packaging configuration, much like that of the Mattel Replica Part II Hoverboard, left me with a tear on the flap and a tear in my eye. Even when then trying to pry my fingers into the crevice to pull it open, the flap then got crinkled. If there’s a science to opening these more flawlessly, then please have Doc Brown or any Hot Wheel collector leave their instructions below so I can note it for…the future! Now that’s behind us, lets move on.

Pristine collector packaging? Where we're going we don't need, pristine collector packaging!

I have to say, revisting these toys are like jumping right back into the movies. There’s a sense of excitement, nostalgia, and a comfortable familiarity that comes with having a high quality and detailed product like this. It not only connects you back to the film, but is a wonderful, iconic and physical representation that any fan would appreciate displaying at home or at work.

Marty: "Wait a minute, what are you doing Doc?" Doc: "I need fuel!" — Marty and Doc while refueling Mr. Fusion with garbage

The Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor was the name of a power source used by the DeLorean time machine. The actual unit was manufactured by Fusion Industries.

Now to be honest, there isn’t a whole lot different between this version and the original Hot Wheels Elite Back to the Future 1:43 scale we reviewed last year. And I encourage you to go back when done reading this to revisit that exploration for the details that make up the bulk of this product. What does make this revision stand out is exactly what it clearly says it includes; Mr Fusion. This updated version of the time-traveling DeLorean includes a revised rear deck area that features Mr.Fusion’s base and the actual fusion generator.

Fun Fact: In an earlier script of Back to the Future Part II, the Mr. Fusion was named the Westinghouse Fusion Energizer.

Did you know that it's been rumored that Back to the Future series Producer Bob Gale has an extra Mr. Fusion unit sitting on his desk, acting as a lamp?

Also a new addition to this product is the iconic 2015 DeLorean retro-fit barcode license plate now on the rear of the Delorean.

Fun Fact: At the end of the original film the camera filming the rear of the DeLorean can be seen in the reflection of the barcode license plate.

One of my favorite details of the prior and this recent version of the DeLorean is the Plutonium chamber and Time Circuits on the dashboard of the vehicle. I do still wish the doors could open to peer inside for a better look. In the right lighting and correct angle, you can see the Flux Capacitor box in-between the driver/passenger seats in the rear interior of the toy as well.

Did you Know? The time circuits of the DeLorean time machine were an integral part to its functionality. They were coupled with an input device and a display. The display was divided into three sections: Destination Time, Present Time, and Last Time Departed.

Great details once again roll over in this latest rendition.

As with the original version, hand painted detailing on the body, windows, interior and engine parts makes all the difference here. The Finish is Polished Grey and really feels authentic to the car seen in the movie.
