Beyond the Marquee STAR WARS Fans … MAY THE 4TH Be With You!!!
May 4th, 2013
Beyond the Marquee Though mentally you know it’s the day before Cinco de Mayo tomorrow, for Star Wars fans around the world, Saturday, May 4th is the worldwide day to say “May the Force be with you” to all and celebrate the beloved stories that bind our galaxy together. “May the 4th” kicks off a season of celebration, particularly since the month of May has always been important to Star Wars fans.
The six live-action movies of the Star Wars saga debuted in May (starting with the original Star Wars on May 25, 1977) and this year, May 25 marks the 30th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. The month of May includes George Lucas’ birthday (May 14, 1944), and has been the traditional start date of the popular Star Wars Weekends at Walt Disney World Resort (this year, the fun begins on May 14). With the exciting launch of a new trilogy of movies beginning with Star Wars: Episode VII arriving in the near future, this day to celebrate the saga and its amazing fans is certain to become even bigger in the next few years.
Some of the Beyond the Marquee team will be in attendance on May the Fourth at the Entertainment Weekly’s CapeTown Film Festival at the the historic Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. We’ll be sure to come back with pics, interviews and updates from this special one-day event which is a SOLD OUT 30th anniversary revival of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. It’s taking place in the same location as it did when it premiered in May of 1983. Just in case you’re in need of some inspiration, StarWars.com has compiled a list of 10 fun ways you can celebrate your love of a galaxy far, far, away. Click ahead to check them out!
INVINCIBLE IRON MAN 3 (Film Review)
May 3rd, 2013
Steven D'Arcangelo To say Marvel’s Iron Man 3 is better than Iron Man 2 is the understatement of the year. The sequels may occupy the same world but, in terms of quality, they’re not even in the same ballpark. The golden Avenger’s third solo outing restores the series to the glory of the original and, in some respects, surpasses it.
When franchises get to the third chapter, the results tend to fall into two categories — a carbon copy of the original’s formula (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which I love despite its recycled Raiders template) or a staggering drop in quality (Godfather Part III, Superman III, X-Men: The Last Stand). IM3 manages to avoid both pitfalls. One reason is obvious — low expectations thanks to the universally panned prior installment. Next to IM2, anything would be an improvement. But to say that’s the only reason the new one is better would be unfair to the filmmakers.
So how does IM3 rise above the Part III doldrums that plague so many other franchises? Read on to find out, true believers!
Iron Man 3, A Blast in 3D (Film Review)
May 2nd, 2013
John Delia
Probably the most powerful film for action addicts this year Iron Man 3 blazes the screen in 3D. Robert Downey Jr. outdoes his last outing of the major action hero with his strong presence and tongue in cheek wit. Whether you are a fan of Marvel or just looking for a great adventure film, check this one out. It’s the film that keeps giving with chat way after you’ve left the theater, but don’t give away the surprise ending and stay for a last word at the end of the credits.
Paris-Manhattan, Life According to Woody (Film Review)
May 2nd, 2013
John Delia
Alice Taglioni does a very good impression of Woody Allen in the romantic comedy Paris-Manhattan now playing in theaters. The cute little film uses the famous actor’s views on life from several of his films to work out a plot that should satisfy most of Allen fans and incurable romantics. Sophie Lellouche does a fair job in her first attempt at directing her own script, but for creative reasons her film never reaches a level more than average.
