Peter Jackson and Air New Zealand Create a Hobbit Safety Briefing Video

This morning, as the first Air New Zealand flight for the day took off for the skies, its passengers were treated to a brand new safety briefing video – An Unexpected Briefing – inspired by the upcoming fantasy adventure The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) The video is written by Weta’s own Ben Hawker who also travelled to Auckland to act as the creative consultant and Middle-earth expert during the filming. Weta also created the familiar prosthetics for the actors and several designers from Weta’s Design Studio also contributed to the video. The safety video will be rolled out across Air New Zealand aircraft starting today. Customers who pay close attention to the safety video could win a once-in-a-lifetime Middle-earth experience in New Zealand. Hidden within the video are secret Elvish codes. Viewers who spot the codes can then visit www.airnzcode.com/hobbitmovie to unlock the door to Bag End and be in to win a trip for two to New Zealand, including a tour of the Hobbiton movie set, a visit to the Weta Cave in Wellington, and double passes to the red carpet global premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Check Out the World’s Biggest GOLLUM at the Wellington Airport in New Zealand!!!

A Precious Installation at Wellington Airport

As the home of the phenomenal The Lord of the Rings franchise and in anticipation of the upcoming The Hobbit release this December, a 42 foot long Gollum now has found a home at the Wellington Airport in New Zealand. The sculpture, which is suspended from the roof, shows the emaciated physique and momentary expression of glee on the face of Gollum, submerged and reaching for his favourite meal of ‘juicy sweet fishes’. The Gollum creation was designed and facilitated by Richard Taylor and Weta’s workshop supervisor Rob Gillies to create an unforgettable experience into Wellington Airport, the gateway of the Wellington region. Richard said, “We have had a long and wonderful relationship with the Wellington Airport team, who continually focus on presenting an exciting gateway into our city. We are thrilled to once again be creating something with Wellington Airport that will bring delight to the many visitors coming to our fabulous city.” Click ahead to read more about this creative piece of work and check out the time-lapse video of it’s installation…
