MARVEL’S AGENT CARTER: Valediction (television mini-series critique)

Carter-logo-8

The grand finale of Agent Carter is both grand and final.

The grandness comes in the form of feature film quality special effects, most evident in a climatic flight over Manhattan. Just as grand is the top-notch production design showcased in an art-deco movie palace and a hanger full of classic airplanes.

As for the finality, it comes by way of some well-earned closure for Peggy, her supporting cast, and the audience.

“INSURGENT” (Film Review & Trailer)

Taking the helm for this second installment in the Divergent series Robert Schwentke gives us a treat within a treatment. Not all fun and roses, Insurgent gives a reworking and a bird’s eye view of the various factions that were explained in the first film of the series. Whether Schwentke was instructed to stretch out the series or that it would be really cool to check out the locations of the Factions, the tactic waters down this installment.  That said, read on for some new innovating revelations.

“MR. KAPLAN” (Foreign Film Review & Trailer)

Direction, acting and a well written script are the three things that are needed to win over an audience with a comedy about a serious subject. With Mr. Kaplan the cast and crew connect in a big way taking the plot that involves Nazis on the run and turning it into a comical jaunt. It’s the personalities that make it a good show and this script has some doozies.

“RUN ALL NIGHT” (Film Review & Trailer)

It’s father versus father in the exciting action drama Run All Night. The hard hitting crime film gets right into the story of violence and never stops dishing it out. Smart directing, very good cast and intense camera work make this film a winner. If you like Liam Neeson in movies like Taken then you will not want to miss his most powerful performance yet.

MARQUEE MAMA says Disney’s CINDERELLA Casts a New Spell – At the Stroke of Perfection!

Marquee Mama Reviews Disney's Cinderella

Marquee Mama Reviews Disney’s Cinderella

I think I finally understand the hypnotic abilities of fairy tales. It was always very mysterious to me why little girls devoted their young selves to emulating princesses from movies – wearing the giant bell-shaped dresses, sparkly tiaras, sometimes even carrying a wand. I wondered, do they all believe they’ll someday marry into a royal family? I still can’t answer that question, but after seeing “Cinderella”, I can tell you it’s really fun to fantasize about it!

I’ve lost count of the number of remakes and reinterpretations of the original movie (from 1950!), but this is the first one I’ve seen – start to finish – and I loved it! And while it wasn’t nostalgic for me as a first-time viewer, this one is sure to please the nostalgic masses. It was a visually magnificent with near-perfect casting (Lily James was born to play Cinderella) and a balanced blend of tragedy, triumph, a lot of laughs, a few tears and plenty of adventure. Take your daughters to see this one.

“CINDERELLA” (Film Review & Trailer)

Every child, especially young girls will feel the romance and the special family values within Cinderella. The live action mixed with CGI turns the original animated movie into a spectacular screen show with a perfect cast and pin point direction by Kenneth Branagh. And there’s enough comedy and adventure to treat the boys as well. What’s missing however, are the songs that made the original animated version back in the 1950’s memorable. There is very little opportunity for toe tapping and humming that we’ve come to expect from a Disney film.
