Happy East...um, 4th of July...

Fans of Disney•Pixar’s feature films love to scour the screen in search of the Hidden Gems the filmmakers sneak into each film: WALL•E’s explorations uncover a Mike Wazowski antenna ball, paying homage to Monsters, Inc., and in Up, the classic Luxo Jr. ball can be seen in the girl’s bedroom as Carl Fredricksen’s house flies by her window. It’s nice to see the producers of the Spider-Man franchise finally take advantage of Stan Lee’s penchant for adjectives by naming the latest installment after the wall-crawler’s flagship comic book. Hopefully other comic titles like Spectacular Spider-Man and Web of Spider-Man will follow as sequel titles, rather than just tacking on numbers as the Sam Raimi trilogy did. To be fair (and ironic), Spider-Man 2’s working title was Amazing Spider-Man.

Why the Raimi films ultimately shunned the adjective approach could’ve been fear of living up to said adjective. Why make critics’ jobs easier by giving them headlines for negative reviews? “INCREDIBLE HULK INCREDIBLY BORING!” “FANTASTIC FOUR NOT FANTASTIC!” (Hence this review’s generic headline.)

So does the new film live up to its amazing title? Read on, true believers!

This is all I heard from my wife for days, urging me to call her favorite LA-based morning radio show. On a whim I did, and to my surprise I got through. “What’s the answer?” asked the no-nonsense intern on the other end of the line. “Crusher Hogan,” I said. “Hold on for your tickets.” I thought to myself, “Self, it can’t be that easy, can it?” It can.

Andy Griffith Has Died At Age 86

Andy Griffith : June 1, 1926 – July 3, 2012

Revered actor Andy Griffith, star of “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Matlock,” has died at age 86 today.

The news was confirmed by former University of North Carolina President, Bill Friday, who is a close friend of the actor. Mr. Griffith died at his home in Dare County, North Carolina around 7AM, Tuesday morning.

Griffith, who was born in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, was best known as Sheriff Andy Taylor in “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1960-1968. Having a varied career in television and films, Mr. Griffith achieved success once again by playing the title character, Ben Matlock, in the widely regarded legal drama, “Matlock”. His name will forever be synonymous with his two most popular shows.
