CAPS to Launch Celebrity Cartoonist Art Auction to Benefit Fellow Cartoonist Stan Sakai and Family

On Thursday, March 6, 2014, Southern California’s CAPS, the Comic Art Professional Society, will launch an ongoing series of eBay auctions of original comic art. Its goal is to raise funds for medical care for Sharon Sakai, the wife of respected cartoonist and longtime CAPS member Stan Sakai, creator of the samurai rabbit USAGI YOJIMBO. Sharon has been battling a debilitating brain tumor for some time; after an extended hospital stay and convalescence, she is currently at home, but her condition requires 24-hour care and medicine that costs more than the Sakai’s insurance covers. 100% of the proceeds of these auctions will go directly to Stan and Sharon Sakai to help pay their ongoing medical expenses. British Singer and Actress Billie Piper made one of her first USA Doctor Who convention appearances in Los Angeles, California over President’s Day Weekend in late February 2014. As one of the most popular of the Doctor’s Companions, it was a real treat when she volunteered to sit down for a few minutes with our own 5 1/2 year old resident Whovian; Lindalee. Of course with Lindalee, the traditional Doctor Who fan questions are tossed out the window and the honest and fun inquiries of a young fan are always a treat to watch. Check out the Video Above.

“Johnny B. Goode” Studio Guitar Headed to Auction

Up for auction next month is a phenomenal piece of music & movie history – the studio guitar which was used for two iconic scenes in the first Back to the Future movie: the opening scene of Back to the Future when Marty tries Doc’s amplifier and guitar, only to be literally blown away by the speaker; and the memorable scene when Marty is playing “Johnny B. A typical day of filming creates anywhere from 25 to 50 terabytes of footage, according to Rackspace. The average set locale is a tedious drive through LA. And that’s assuming it’s not out of state. Imagine what that means over the course of an entire episodic series. That’s lots of data, and presumably, lots of gas.

Filmmakers know this all too well, and they’ve spent the last several years using the cloud to the height of its ability. They are saving loads of footage in one virtual location and keeping their butts in the director’s chairs of another. As developments in security abound, dependable cloud storage keeps Hollywood at the forefront. Today, they employ platforms like DigitalFilm Tree and UltraViolet, so every frame can be edited and sold, respectively, as quickly as it’s shot.
