“Her” Romancing the Phone (Film Review)

One of the better features at the movies “Her” has been released wide after a short limited stint that qualifies it for the Oscar race.  The Sci-fi comedy/drama that takes place in the future uses some of the phone knowledge we have today, but adding many twists on the potential of our present day communications.  With a brilliant performance by Joaquin Phoenix the film should be on every film buff’s list.

Set in the future the film centers on Theodore Twanby a conflicted guy who separated from his wife.  He writes letters for a greeting company and he’s content with that profession.  He’s been offered blind dates by his best friends, but for the time being he’s happy with phone sex, although it’s becoming a little too quirky for him.

“Lone Survivor” An Emotional True Story (Film Review)

A startling true story reaches theaters this weekend and it’s very realistic. Lone Survivor takes the viewer on an ‘edge of your seat’ trip into Afghanistan with a Navy Seals squad.  It’s not a documentary, but a gut wrenching drama that shows the brutal fighting that goes on in a country in turmoil.  Extremely well acted, directed and with cringing cinematography the film’s a shocking war on terror story.  If you can take a lot of nervous tension and combat violence, put yourself in a seat at a local theater for this aggressive true story.

MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Ep. 11: The Magical Place (T.V. review)

SHIELD Level 7

The Magical Place is the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mid-season premiere that picks up where the mid-season finale left off. (Remember when television shows just had one premiere and one finale per season?)

The “finale” ended on a cliffhanger with Agent Coulson getting himself kidnapped by Project Centipede.  Now the mission is to rescue him and take down Centipede.  After a two-week holiday hiatus, the series returns with one of the best, if not the best, episodes of the season.  How does it earn its stars and stripes?  Let’s debrief and find out.

Lucasfilm and Marvel Entertainment Join Forces to Publish Star Wars Comics and Graphic Novels

Star Wars comics now transition to Marvel from Dark Horse

Star Wars comics now transition to Marvel from Dark Horse

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.” Yes that was the quote from Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars as he sensed Alderaan’s destruction. But a similar cry was heard recently from the team at Dark Horse Comics when the announcement was made last week that after nearly 20 years, the franchise license and all rights would soon shift to from Dark Horse to Marvel. Now, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Marvel Entertainment will be joining forces to bring new Star Wars adventures to readers across the galaxy, with Marvel granted exclusive rights to create and publish Star Warscomics and graphic novels beginning in 2015.

The agreement marks a homecoming for the Star Wars comic books. Marvel Comics published the first Star Wars comic book, Star Wars #1, in March 1977, which went on to sell more than 1 million copies. Marvel Comics published its Star Wars series for nine years. In 1991, Dark Horse Comics took over the license, publishing fan-favorite titles like Dark Empire and Star Wars: Legacy. Last year, Dark Horse released The Star Wars #1, an adaptation of George Lucas’ original rough-draft screenplay for the film, garnering rave reviews and national media attention and ranking among the top-selling Star Wars comics of all time.
