Whether you’ve seen them allready, or ar thirsty to revisit them again, here are this weeks’ latest and greatest.
ON THE ROAD (No US Release Date Yet) After the death of his father, Sal Paradise, an aspiring New York writer, meets Dean Moriarty, a wild and infectiously charismatic ex-con. They hit it off immediately. Determined to avoid the pitfalls of a narrow, prescribed life, Sal hits the road, joining Dean on what evolves into a life-changing physical and emotional odyssey. Thirsting for freedom, they discover the world, the ecstasy of experience, the connectedness of humanity and ultimately themselves.
THIS IS FORTY (12-21-12) Judd Apatow’s follow-up to 2007’s Knocked Up is getting a “sort of” sequel that nails the nuances of what it means to turn that “perceived to be old” age.
ZERO DARK THIRTY (12-19-12) Zero Dark Thirty follows the Navy SEAL Team 6 in their ultimately successful hunt for the al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
THE HOBBIT (12-14-12) “The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
NOBODY WALKS (10-12-12) Martine, a 23-year-old artist from New York, arrives in Los Angeles to stay in the pool house of a family living in the hip and hilly community of Silver Lake. Peter, the father, has agreed to help Martine complete sound design on her art film as a favor to his wife. Martine innocently enters the seemingly idyllic life of this open-minded family with two kids and a relaxed Southern California vibe. Like a bolt of lightning, her arrival sparks a surge of energy that awakens suppressed impulses in everyone and forces them to confront their own fears and desires.
KILLING THEM SOFTLY (10-19-12) A robbery committed against the Mob is investigated by a hitman’s boss in this caper from director Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford). Brad Pitt and Sam Rockwell star in the Plan B/Chockstone Pictures production.
THE PAPERBOY (10-5-12) A directionless young man (Zac Efron) helps his reporter brother (Matthew McConaughey) investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a man on death row, and in the process, falls for the woman (Nicole Kidman) whom the convict has been romancing through prison correspondence.
Paranormal Activity 4 (10-19-12)
THE WORDS (9-7-12) Starring Bradley Cooper, Oscar(R)-winner Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde and Zoe Saldana, the layered romantic drama The Words follows young writer Rory Jansen who finally achieves long sought after literary success after publishing the next great American novel. There’s only one catch – he didn’t write it. As the past comes back to haunt him and his literary star continues to rise, Jansen is forced to confront the steep price that must be paid for stealing another man’s work, and for placing ambition and success above life’s most fundamental three words.
THE BIG WEDDING (10-26-12) With an all-star cast led by Robert DeNiro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace, with Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams, THE BIG WEDDING is an uproarious romantic comedy about a charmingly modern family trying to survive a weekend wedding celebration that has the potential to become a full blown family fiasco. To the amusement of their adult children and friends, long divorced couple Don and Ellie Griffin (De Niro and Keaton) are once again forced to play the happy couple for the sake of their adopted son’s wedding after his ultra conservative biological mother unexpectedly decides to fly halfway across the world to attend. With all of the wedding guests looking on, the Griffins are hilariously forced to confront their past, present and future – and hopefully avoid killing each other in the process. SKYFALL (11-9-12) Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.
TAKEN 2 (10-5-12) Former government agent Bryan Mills has retired and attempts to reassemble his old life, after years of overseas employment have left him estranged from his teenage daughter. But when she is kidnapped while in Europe, Bryan must revert to his old skill set to rescue her before she disappears forever.
CHASING MAVERICKS (10-26-12) The inspirational true story of real life surfing phenom Jay Moriarity (played by newcomer Jonny Weston). When 15 year old Jay discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, is not only real, but exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson (played by Gerard Butler) to train him to survive it. As Jay and Frosty embark on their quest to accomplish the impossible, they form a unique friendship that transforms both their lives, and their quest to tame Mavericks becomes about far more than surfing. Chasing Mavericks was made with the help of some of the biggest names in the surfing world, and features some of the most mind-blowing real wave footage ever captured on film.
