Beyond the Marquee A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away …
Wait a minute! Sorry, wrong Lucasfilm (ahem), we mean, Disney property. What we were trying to just say is that not too long ago, Beyond the Marquee was invited by our friends down at the Discovery Science Center in Orange County to take a good look at the amazing traveling exhibit, Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology. The exhibit is packed full of original props and costumes from all four Indy movies. And along the way, you can actually learn something about the science and technology of Archaeology that gave George Lucas the inspiration to create Indiana Jones. We spent several hours digging up some information and footage of the entire exhibit and hope you’ll take this adventure with us.

The Ark of the Covenant
Indiana Jones™ and the Adventure of Archaeology, presented by the National Geographic Society, immerses you in the science and history of field archaeology. Walk in the footsteps of beloved film hero Indiana Jones as you embark on this interactive museum adventure.
This Unique Exhibition Features :

Exhibit Highlights:
Quest for Treasure
In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indy is on a classic search for treasure—in this case, to find the Ark of the Covenant.
In the past, some archaeologists searched for spectacular treasures. Today, archaeologists’ true quest is to find objects that most advance their knowledge regardless of their monetary value.
Dig Into the Past
In Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Mayapore’s Shaman begs Indy to find the Sankara Stone, a fertility symbol of the god Shiva, that was stolen, along with all the village children, by the Thuggees.
Without Indy’s knowledge of the folklore and beliefs of the villagers, the stolen Sankara stone is just a rock. Find out how archaeologists piece together the stories surrounding the objects they find.
Investigate
Indy’s search for the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is one that has long fascinated mankind. Like a detective, he used his knowledge to distinguish the real object.
Just as Indy “decoded” the clues around him to choose the true Grail in The Last Crusade, after archaeologists have found an artifact, they must examine the clues and symbols around it to draw their conclusions.
Solve the Mystery
In Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Indy analyzes a crystal skull found in the Chauchilla Cemetery, revealing the secrets of its past.
Indy’s analysis of the skull found in the cemetery says a lot about his profession. The interpretation of material remains is often the most challenging part of the archaeologist’s work.
Local Artifacts from Mission San Juan Capistrano
On a local level, DSC has also partnered with the famous Mission San Juan Capistrano to showcase some of their fascinating finds. Visitors to the exhibit can expect to see a statue of St. Francis dating from the late 1700s, a silver ciborium, limestone blocks from the Great Stone Church, plus many more. These artifacts represent the historical significance of the religious, architectural and every-day existence of Mission San Juan Capistrano’s varied history.
