Movie Trailers to Watch For During Super Bowl 2013

Anticipated Movie Trailers during Super Bowl XLVII

Marketing is a huge part of a movie’s box office budget, and the Super Bowl is the grand stage when it comes to television spots. Cable.tv noted that premium 30-second spots in this year’s NFL championship game will cost in excess of $4 million, which is a new high. That’s not necessarily a bank breaker by Hollywood’s standards, but you’d better believe they want to get their money’s worth when showing off to an audience of more than 100 million people (the number of last year’s game, a 26-year record according to International Business Times). And they usually do. The movie “Act of Valor,” which premiered a trailer during last year’s Super Bowl, earned $24 million in it’s opening weekend, $10 million more than estimates predicted, USA Today reported. The movie, featuring real-life Navy Seals over big-name actors, owes a lot of its success to Super Bowl marketing. It’s a “go big or go home” playing field when it comes to competing for the country’s most coveted ad space, and these studios almost always go big. Click ahead to read about some of the trailers you get to look forward to for Super Bowl XLVII (Note: the one’s embedded are NOT one’s being shown in this year’s Superbowl)

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

The anticipated sequel to J.J. Abrams re-imagination of the Star Trek franchise, “Into Darkness” promises a grittier look into the lives of James T. Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise as they face-off against new enemies. In an interview with Craveonline.com, Abrams praises actor Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance as John Harrison, calling the character a “much more emotionally and intellectually challenging villain” than the previous film’s Nero. So the stakes will be high to top what was already a great original film.

‘Oblivion’

Tom Cruise stars in what can be jokingly called the sequel to “War of the Worlds.” Oblivion takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth ravaged by alien life. Cruise’s character is on a task force assigned with policing and protecting what’s left civilization but, surprise, it doesn’t go well and we’re treated to two hours of Tom Cruise doing what he does best shooting guns and appearing to run really, really fast!

‘Iron Man 3’

Can we get enough of Tony Stark? I say no, and Marvel is riding the momentum of “The Avengers” popularity and success to give us a third chapter of Iron Man’s fight for liberty, justice and the trademark Stark ego. The third go-around looks too much darker than the first two, and it’s honestly hard to see how the Iron Man character makes it out of this one alive.

‘Man of Steel’ (Rumored)

The fan message boards are going ape over the possibility of a new “Man of Steel” spot in February, but no official word exists if that wish will come true. The Super Bowl trailer bill also includes Disney’s “Oz” and “The Lone Ranger,” so there isn’t a whole lot of room left for more previews. Still, one can dream of one of the world’s biggest Superhero movies advertising on the world’s biggest sports stage, right?
