World War Z: The Art of the Film

This week at the Beyond the Marquee offices, we got in another highly anticipated “Art of” book from our good pals at TITAN Books. Now available to own, it’s WORLD WAR Z: The Art of the Film and this one is a bit non-traditional from the other “Art of” books we have reviewed from Titan in the past. Based on the novel by Max Brooks and now a major motion picture from Paramount Studios, this book, coming in at close to 160 pages, features conceptual art for the film and the screenplay written by Matthew Michael Carnahan, Drew Goddard and Damon Lindelof. Read ahead for our review…

As I mentioned, this book feels different than the traditional horizontal hard cover “Art of” books and more like an oversized paperback novel than an illustrated companion to the movie. The quality of the cover and back are impressive in texture  with some cool raised printing in some areas of the front movie art.

The book is full of color, packed from end to end with production sketches, photos from the film and concept art. There’s also lots of quotes from assorted cast and crew peppered in thruout, which doesn’t give or take anything away really, but is a nice gesture to forever immortalize those who may have contributed to the film who normally don’t get the recognition they deserve. Unfortunately none of the quotes really delve too deep into the making of the film or support the images scattered within the book. Now, if you’re ever needing to reference concept art of zombie destruction, this is your one stop shop for that…and even the shop has taken it’s toll from the wake of the undead.  The payoff in this book comes towards the end with some great photography and 3D models of the stars walking dead themselves, the Zombies. It’s on these pages that you’ll find some really detailed and scary imagery that will sure to delight any movie monster fan.

“Art of” traditionalists may find this book a little wordy because honestly, most of the book is the full shooting script itself. Granted the images that run along the heavy screenplay text do more than just off-set the wordy text, they relate to the action or location being described on the page, though if not reading and just looking for imagery, then it feels like nothing is in any sort of order. in this book. It feels like they should have called this; “The Original Screenplay of “World War Z”, loaded with over 100 colorful images from the movie”
