THE WORLD’S END Does Not Disappoint Fans Down Under at the New Zealand Premiere! (Film Review)

The World's End (2013)

The World’s End Premiere

Film Director Edgar Wright doesn’t disappoint with his latest Pegg – Frost comedy The World’s End.  With the previous stellar films, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, this latest in the comedy trilogy had a great deal to live up to.  Impeccable timing, gruesome yet clever fight sequences, gripping action, great one-liners and a ridiculously funny script are just a few of the highlights.  The story line is another unbelievable scenario playing out, where five old friends reunite to finish a bar crawl from 20 years ago, they become heroes and must save the day (and the world of course).

Beyond the Marquee’s own New Zealand correspondent “Lady Kiwi” was on hand for the New Zealand premiere for the film last week and delivers this review for the film. The World’s End opens in New Zealand this Thursday, followed after by Ireland, the UK, Canada, Iceland, Australia and will eventually get to us here in the states on Aug 23rd.

The World’s End (2013)

Releasing this summer across the globe, The World’s End, is definitely worth catching before time runs out.  If you’re a fan of the dynamic duo of British comedians, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, or just appreciate clever comedy in general, you’ll want to catch their latest collaboration. Simon Pegg is exceptional in his role and delivers such a bravura performance, you almost forget who you are watching.  All three past Pegg-Frost movies showcase his diversity with very different and quirky characters and this one is no different.  Nick Frost holds his own again, getting some of the greatest “kills” in this latest flick.  The audience went a little mad with cheering and laughing out loud, in fact there were more than a few great lines that were drowned out by the enthusiasm of the audience.  It definitely warrants a second go round for me, and I’m sure there will be a few more funnies to catch.

The New Zealand premiere included a fun start to the evening with short speeches from Peter Jackson, Simon, Nick, Martin Freeman, and director Edgar Wright, who Peter Jackson dubbed a 12 year old boy with a fake beard.  Not to worry, Edgar assured us his beard was real.  Peter and these guys seem to have a real friendship and a history of working together.  Peter even had a cameo as Santa Claus in Hot Fuzz.

Currently still filming here in Wellington, The Hobbit 3 brought a few other stars to the red carpet including Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt, Graham McTavish, Adam Brown, William Kirchner and Aidan Turner all signing autographs and wowing the Lord of the Rings fans.

Overall, I give this a BIG 4 and a half stars, but place it just behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.  Although, this final installment surpasses the previous films with special effects, not over the top, but right in there, keeping with the ridiculous story and crazy feel to this movie, really well done.  Pegg – Frost fans will be delighted and probably be begging for more! It definitely lives up to the name, Barmageddon and then some!

Lady Kiwi says Good-On-Ya and keep those NZ premieres coming!
