Movie goers in a 4DX Theater

In just one evening I floated through space, flew over vast landscapes with winds sweeping over me, got chills in the Arctic, was (lightly) doused by an enormous waterfall, had billowing smoke roll over me from several explosions, put the petal to the medal in wild car chases, had bullets and missiles whiz by my head, and was thrust into the middle of intense, thunderous Transformer smack-downs — and I didn’t even have to leave my chair.

Throughout history, the theatrical experience has transformed in ever evolving ways — from the showcasing of black and white silent film to IMAX HFR 3-D and Dolby Atmos sound. Now a unique cinematic adventure is taking it even further — by literally immersing you in the filmgoing experience — it’s called 4DX.

Recently I went to the premiere showing in the first ever 4DX theater in the United States — located at the Regal Cinemas in Downtown Los Angeles. Transformers: Age of Extinction was screened, and given its preponderance of action sequences — it absolutely made for a fitting kick-off to experience 4DX with. The 4DX theater consists of 104 motion and vibrating chairs (which move in several directions) and environmental effects including wind, bubbles, lightning, fog, scent, vibration, air shot, and water shot — all of which work in synch with the action on screen — as well as 3-D viewing.

I‘d liken the experience to Disney theme park rides such as Star Tours and Soarin’ Over California and to (appropriately enough) Transformers: The Ride 3-D at the Universal Theme Parks, with 4DX weighing in with more effects. While those rides last only a few minutes — here I was settled in for the movie’s whopping 2 hours and 45 minutes running time — and throughout it all, the effects and seat movements never became mundane or trite — definitely the contrary, it all pulled me into the film and was a helluva lot of fun! Many of the ambient effects encircle the theater, while close range effects, such as water and air bursts, emerge from the seat. Throughout the viewing, the audience cheered — and at the end, well earned applause erupted.

I’m looking forward to going again — and also projecting ahead, you can bet I’ll be first in line to watch STAR WARS: Episode 7 in 4DX!
