BOOK REVIEW: (by Steve Czarnecki) I’ve been a devoted Planet of the Apes fan since I was in my single digits of age, so of course I jumped at the chance when asked to review the book of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: The Art of the Films. This beautiful hardcover art book details the making of both the recent releases of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Coming in at about 176 pages this book is equally split between both films and features concept art, behind-the-scenes photography and film stills, as well as a foreword by director Matt Reeves.

The first 80 pages covers the Rise of the Planet of the Apes and takes you on a great concept to creation journey of the re-envisioning of the first film, the rest continues the saga with this month’s recent theatrical release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Anyone who has an interest in either of these films, let alone; Making of or Art of books, will be VERY pleased with this one!

The concept art sketches alone will make you appreciate the hard work taken to bring this film to life. I found myself going “WOW, I want that concept art to hang on my wall!!!” Some gorgeous illustrations and paintings that aren’t too much off from the final vision delivered in the films itself. Add on top of that pages upon pages of drawings and photography of locations both concrete and organic, from kitchens, bedrooms and laboratories to skyscrapers, city streets and the forest home of the Apes villages. If you ever wondered what went on behind the scenes of these movies, you’ll get your fill of great candid in-production photos of soundstage sets and outdoor shoots.

The book has a great inter-woven feel that glides you effortlessly between the Art of and the Making of the two movies. It certainly kept my attention as I would enjoy glancing and reading about Vehicles, Weapons and Props, then learn about the development of the various characters before enjoying imagery of giant painted exterior background murals of the city.

The highlight of the book for me was reading about Andy Serkis and his team’s Performance Capture techniques for the films. The fact that no real Chimps, Apes, Orangutans or Gorillas’ were used in this film and they were all CGI is impressive in itself. But to read what went on camera and behind the scenes to bring to life the movements and personalities of each of the simians were jaw dropping. It’s hard to imagine that a bunch of grown adults jumping around in spotted motion-capture bodysuits were the foundation and reference for the movements and articulated facial expressions of the non-human stars of these movies. You will not look at any of these films again the same way after reading this book!

If you’re a serious POTA fan, or know someone who is, this is a MUST HAVE! Pick it up over at TITAN Books or Amazon.com today!

NOTE: We’re also giving away the paperback novelization of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes which tells the story of a growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar. When their evolving world is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier, they reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
