Who’s going from Beverly Hills to Broadway this year?

It’s not uncommon that Hollywood stars regularly make the leap to Broadway. Whether it’s a career move, mid-season time-killer, passion project or the perfectly cast starring role, this year alone, more than two dozen shows feature a big-screen celeb.

Currently on Broadway

• Zach Braff in “Bullets Over Broadway”: Writer, director and star of the just-released “Wish I Was Here” as well as 2004s “Garden State,” funnyman Braff takes the lead role in this mobster musical based on the Woody Allen movie of the same name. Although The New York Times did not praise the show, calling it “all but charm-free,” the critic did say that Braff “sings and dances with a winning insouciance.” Catch Braff through Aug. 24 at St. James Theatre.
• Alan Cumming and Michelle Williams in “Cabaret”: Cumming reprises the M.C. role for which he won a Tony in 1998. Variety proclaims, “He’s so very, very good at being so very, very bad, he can keep [the role] forever.” Williams, star of “My Week With Marilyn” and “Oz the Great and Powerful,” puts on her dancing shoes to play Sally Bowles, a performer at the seedy Berlin club where M.C. reigns. However, the New York Times critic did not agree with her casting in the brash role. See the duo through Nov. 9 and Williams through Jan. 4, 2015, at Studio 54.

Coming Soon to Broadway

• Michael Cera in “This Is Our Youth”: This quirky young actor’s big-screen credits include “Juno,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Superbad.” Now, he stars in the story of how three lost souls spent 48 hours in New York during the early ’80s. The show opens in previews Aug. 18 at Cort Theatre.
• James Earl Jones and Rose Byrne in “You Can’t Take It With You”: The voice of Mufasa and Darth Vader appears in this revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play about the night when a couple brings their wildly different families together for dinner. Jones, who has two Tonys to his credit, stars along with Byrne, most recently seen in “Neighbors.” See the pair in previews on Aug. 26 at Longacre Theatre.
• Brian Dennehy, Mia Farrow, Carol Burnett, Alan Alda, Candice Bergen, Stacy Keach, Diana Rigg, Martin Sheen and Angelica Huston in “Love Letters”: These actors of a certain age take their turns in A.R. Gurney’s acclaimed play about two friends who have exchanged notes, cards and letters from second grade well into their adulthood. This show opens in previews Sept. 13 at Nederlander Theatre.

Opening in the Fall on Broadway

• Hugh Jackman in “The River”: The star of Wolverine and host of the Tony Awards plays opposite Irish actress Laura Donnelly in this story of a man and a woman in a remote cabin on the cliffs. Catch this major celeb, who is known to break house records, in previews Oct. 31 at Circle in the Square Theatre.
• Ewan McGregor and Maggie Gyllenhaal in “The Real Thing”: McGregor’s credits include Young Obi-Wan Kenobi and Christian in “Moulin Rouge!” This fall he will take on the role of a successful playwright with Gyllenhaal playing his actress wife. Life imitates art when she appears in his current production about a dying marriage. See this couple in previews Oct. 2 at American Airlines Theatre.
• Bradley Cooper in “The Elephant Man”: The star of “Silver Linings Playbook” and “The Hangover” movies hides his good looks in this telling of how John Merrick, a severely disfigured Englishman, went from freak show to high society in 19th century London. And, according to The Hollywood Reporter, this production is one of the most eagerly anticipated shows of the fall season. See the star in previews Nov. 7 at Booth Theatre.
