It seems an strange to see hot and frozen used in the same sentence. But in this case, with Walt Disney Animation Studios 53rd animated feature “Frozen,” hitting it big it isn’t so strange. Inspired by “The Snow Queen,” a Hans Christian Anderson fairytale, “Frozen” is the top-grossing Disney film ever.

Variety.com reports the movie exceeded a billion dollars in March. That kind of impact makes this Disney animated movie a phenomenon.

And now a year later, after being caught off guard last holiday for the success and overwhelming demand for toy product from the smash film, both Disney Consumer products and the company itself is embracing the Frozen phenomenon and not letting it’s new powerhouse brand thaw anytime soon.

‘Let It Go’

The movie’s main song is almost as popular as the movie itself. Singer Idina Menzel sang the movie’s hit song “Let It Go,” which won an Academy Award. The song has turned into somewhat of an anomaly, with everybody attempting to cover it. It’s all over YouTube in various versions by artists and unknowns alike. Featured in many different musical styles, from pop to metal. One amateur covers the song as 21 different Disney and Pixar characters has gone viral on YouTube.

Will ‘Frozen’ Be on Broadway?

“Frozen” has gone to Disney on Ice, and now, producer Peter Del Vecho has confirmed that the rumored plans to take it to Broadway are true. The critical and box office success, and the film’s Broadway veterans Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Santino Fontana will make the transition very easy. Although there is no timeline announced yet, Del Vecho said the Broadway adaptation is in process. He hinted at a sequel to the movie but said it’s too early to share that infomation.

Impact on Parents, Kids and Retailers

The huge success of “Frozen” reaches into the franchise realm for Disney, meaning its potential for merchandising and branding extends to toys, theme park rides, DVDs, music and interactive characters. Going to Broadway will only strengthen this potential. Forbes.com reports that merchandising from the movie led to a 16 percent increase in revenues and a 25 percent increase in operating income for Disney. Frozen merchandise is available in stores and online from retailers like Walmart.

The movie’s popularity even extends to demand for decorated cakes, as Manhattan bakery Tribeca Treats owner Rebecca Thebault explains to New York Times’ Joanna Cohen. Parents see how it has made an impression on their kids, with boys and girls alike quoting characters and singing the movie’s songs.

‘Frozen’ Fashion

In January 2015 Alfred Angelo’s Disney Fairy Tale Bridal collection, along with Disney Consumer Products, will release an Elsa inspired wedding gown! The jewel-embellished strapless dress will be available in traditional ivory or pale blue, and boasts a romantic sweetheart neckline and a chiffon train.

A ‘Frozen’ Short

Planned for a release before next years Disney live-action “Cinderella” movie, Frozen Fever is an upcoming animated short sequel to the 2013 film Frozen.
In Frozen Fever, it’s Anna’s birthday and Elsa and Kristoff are determined to give her the best celebration ever, but Elsa’s ice powers may put more than just the party at risk. Olaf, the snowman, will also make an appearance in the toon.

 

 

After a sinister spell is cast, Elsa, with the help of Captain Hook, goes on a quest to clear her name, and find the perpetrator of the spell cast against Maid Marion.

 ‘Once Upon A Time’

Embracing the “Frozen”franchise, Disney and ABC Television this Fall introduced the main characters of the hit film into their already successful live-action fairy tale network television show, “Once Upon A Time”. Picking up with a storyline that takes place after the 2013 film, the first few episodes deal with Anna going missing the day before her wedding day with Kristoff, Hans trying to capture Elsa so he can rule over Arendale, and Elsa being transported to Storybrooke, Maine with all the other famous fairy-tale heroes, and meeting up with the mysterious Snow Queen. Depending on how ratings continue, we’ll see if this is just a one season storyline, or if the “Frozen” characters will become permanent fixtures on the series.

Toys for 2014 Holiday Season

Fortune.com reports predictions that “Frozen” toys will be hot for the 2014 holiday season. “Frozen” toys and merchandise are expected to equal or exceed the billion-dollar ticket sales tally, and toy manufacturers Mattel and Jakks are reporting difficulty keeping up with demand. The Snow Glow Elsa doll is predicted by Wal-Mart, Toys-R-Us and Toy Insider Magazine as a top runner for their annual gift giving guides. The doll’s dress lights up and she sings the theme song, “Let it Go.” The “Frozen” Cool Tunes Sing-along Boombox is a close second and also on The Toy Insider’s holiday Guide.

 

“Frozen” is nearly a year old now, but its impact still affects kids, families and holiday gift buying as if the movie premiered yesterday. That’s hot news.
