“BIG HERO 6” (Blu-ray Review)

Academy Award winner for best Animated film Big Hero 6 has been released on Blu-ray in a Collector’s Edition combo pack. The adventure filled film won the award this past week two days before it was made available in stores. The Walt Disney Pictures film took a huge bite out of the box-office when it was in theaters this past November coming in 10th place in the US and reaching over $500 million worldwide. The Blu-ray also contains the Academy Award winning short “Feast” as one of its many bonus features.

The story follows Hiro a young boy with big dreams and his brother Tadashi an inventor that has made a huge discovery. One night Tadashi loses his life in a fire caused by a man trying to steal his newest invention, a huge inflatable robot called Baymax. Upset and trying to make sense of it all Hiro manages to get Baymax working. When he discovers the powers of the robot, he along with his friends go on the search for his brother’s killer.

The feisty little film has some lovable characters and good values like courage, kindness and friendship. Directors Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt) make the film family friendly yet exciting for kids from 6 on up. The action is similar to that of PIXAR’s The Incredibles in the vein of super heroes. After teaming up with his friends, Baymax helps the teens to find the diabolical person responsible for Tadashi’s demise. As in all Disney animated films, all’s well that ends well.

The Blu-ray and DVD are both colorful and sharp. The transfer from movie screen to HD televisions is magnificent 1080p HD with its original Aspect Ratio of 2.39:1. The sound using either the Blu-ray’s 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio or DVD with Dolby Digital 5.1 delivers a crisp and clean sound with completely understandable dialogue and special effects sound. The film also comes with 2.0 descriptive audio that allows for sight impaired viewers to understand what is happening in each scene.

BONUS FEATURES:

The extras contained in the Collector’s Edition combo pack include several nicely planned features that are kid friendly an adult interesting.

“Feast” the animated short that won an Oscar and an Anime Award can be played on both the Blu-ray and DVD.
“The Origin Story of ‘Big Hero 6’” Jamie Chung who voices Go Go Tomago in the movie hosts this feature that shows how Big Hero 6 came about from the Marvel comic book to screen. (Blu-ray only)
“Big Animator 6: The Characters Behind the Characters” the animators that brought the characters to the screen show how each of the main heroes of the film were developed. (also on the DVD)
“Deleted Scenes (intro by Directors Don Hall & Chris Williams)” this feature includes two alternate openings and scenes that did not make it to the final cut. (Blu-ray only)
“Big Hero Secrets (Easter Eggs)” – The movie is filled with Easter Eggs. Not the kind of Easter Eggs in your Easter basket but special things like hidden Micky’s and other goodies within the movie. This Buzzfeed-type list piece will give you a sampling of some of the hidden treasures in the film. See if you can find the Easter Egg about Easter Eggs! (Blu-ray only)
