“The Muppets” Blu-Ray review! (aka “Blu’vin Right Along”)

The Muppets Debuts on Blu-ray and DVD March 20th

Man, I’m on a roll today! Two Blu’s down and three more to review! Anyways, it’s time to start the music, it’s time to light the lights…

Yeah, I went there.

So, Steve forced me to write a Blu-Ray review by enticing me with an advance copy of one of my fun filled favorite flicks of last year, “THE MUPPETS”, courtesy of Walt Disney Home Video. Ok, ok, I begged for it. But I just had so much fun watching this movie TWICE in the theatre, how could I resist a FREE Blu-Ray copy of the movie?!

Well, as you know, I’m not much on explaining a film’s story, I mean, it’s The MUPPETS for cryin’ out loud! How much do you need to know?! Ok, I’ll give in and give you my nutshell plot: The Muppets need to save their old Theatre from destruction from an evil guy (Chris Cooper), because, said ‘evil guy’ wants to drill for oil that’s beneath the Muppet Theatre! Problem is, they need money in a short time period…how do they raise the loot?! Why, put on a show, of course! Oh, yeah, how could I forget? It all starts out with love birds Amy Adams & Jason Segel…& his Muppet brother, Walter, wrangling up all of our beloved characters that have all gone their separate ways…because they aren’t relevant anymore. Wocka-Wocka-WHAT!?!?!? I say!

It’s an awesome Muppet Sized adventure that stays true to the Muppets that we loved when we were just tadpoles.

How’d I do? (told you I suck at it)

Pro’s:

– Amy Adams is so damn cute!

–       Fun, old school Muppet jokes and one-liners!

–       Catchy, in fact, TOO CATCHY, toe tappin’ songs…including the Oscar Winning, “Man or a Muppet”.

–       HIGHLY re-watchable!

–       Amy Adams is so damn cute!

 Cons:

-NONE.

There’s my movie nut shell plot and review.

Here’s the Blu-ray Quality Review:

As I watched “The Muppets” on Blu-Ray the other night, I was EXTREMELY impressed with the colors that were leaping off my screen! I mean, it’s as if the movie was made JUST for Blu-Ray! I could see every fiber on Kermit’s felt head, every wavy piece of fur on Fozzy’s cheeks…Amy Adams in HD! Need I say more? In short, the Muppets have never looked better on home video. I just can’t wait until the ORIGINAL “Muppet Movie” hits Blu! Did ya hear me, Disney?! I said, “I just can’t wait until the ORIGINAL “Muppet Movie” hits Blu!

And I just thought the picture looks good?…wait until you hear Muppets in 7.1 surround sound! The sound designers must have had a blast with this one. My surround speakers got a fun workout…and so did my ears. “Man or a Muppet” sounded better than it did in the theatre. Crap, now that song’s in my head again…damn you, Jason segel!

You know what was both fun (& somewhat annoying) on this disc? When you pause the movie to go to the bathroom or take the dog out to do his/her “business”, there is an “intermission” that pops up featuring the Muppets! It’s kinda fun, and a good idea…unless you leave it paused for too long. It repeats itself. So, if you need to make a phone call, just hit ‘stop’ on your remote, or you won’t be able to hear the person on the other end of the line. You also can’t pause the picture to look at something or a name in the credits, because it goes into “intermission” mode. Now, in Disney’s defense, I didn’t read any directions or follow prompts to see if I could avoid the “intermission”, but as some of you may know, guys don’t read directions. So, guys, just giving you a heads-up. Cool?

Other Special Features include:

–       “Scratching The Surface: A Hasty Examination of the Making of the Muppets”…and I LOVE this making-of documentary. So much fun, you’ll have to pause it because you were laughing too hard. Well, it’s not THAT funny, but you’ll definitely chuckle.

–       Deleted Scenes: The Muppets in MORE scenes! More scenes = MORE Muppets (and MORE Amy Adams!)

–       A Little Screen Test On The Way To The Read-Through: The gang’s all here as they make their way to the script read-through.

–       Explaining Evil: The Full Tex Richman Song: Chris Cooper rapping. Cool.

–       Audio Commentary: Sometimes informative commentary, often mixed with jokes & laced with some cool Muppet trivia. Not the best and most informative audio commentary around, but I’m a fan of the creators, so I’ll put up with it.

There are three Discs in the Blu-Ray package that Disney sent us, and the second disc features the standard DVD version of the film as well as “The Longest Blooper Reel Ever Made (**In Muppet History) (**We Think)…so MORE Amy Adams!

Disc Three includes not only the Digital Copy of the film for your computer & portable devices, it also has the movie’s SOUNDTRACK! How’s that for a deal?!

All-in-all, “THE MUPPETS” on Blu-Ray (again, out March 20th) is so sensational, inspirational, & Muppetational, that the Swedish Chef can’t wait to get his human hands on a copy!
