A new movement for movie posters?

This week has seen the release of the first teaser poster for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming movie Django Unchained and it has been met with a mixed reaction from the world wide web. Using just 4 colours and taking quite a minimalist approach to its design, the poster is has been likened to the work of Olly Moss by many.

Compared to many modern day movie posters this is a drastic step, one which leaves many fans slightly confused. The poster doesnt give much away, there is no mention of the cast, no images of the main protagonist and it doesnt even mention a specific release date. Even the images used seem to be more symbolic than factual.

However, the movie poster scene has seen something of an adrenaline boost over the past couple of years with the rise of alternative movie posters and the likes of Mondo, Spoke Art and others raising the bar. Fans go wild for poster art (especially limited edition screenprints) which have become highly collectable and have built up a major cult following.

So what do you think? Is the Django Unchained teaser poster just jumping on the bandwagon? Is it a clever marketing ploy to attract some attention and stand out from the crowd? Or does this mark a new dawn for the art of the movie poster? Are we seeing the first seeds of a new movement that moves away from the much maligned photoshopped jobs into a new era of finely crafted art?
