Box Office Monday: Avengers Fight for the Top

The Avengers Assembled $200,700,000 at the Box Office

Sorry, Potter, no magic-spell can save your previous box office record against the Avengers. And even if there was a spell for record shattering numbers at the box office, every producer in Hollywood would know about it by now.

This week, Marvel’s The Avengers took first place at the box office with a whopping $207.4 million, making it the highest weekend record of all time. The previous record holder was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) with $169.2 million opening weekend. The Avengers also claimed the record for fastest movie to make $100 million, $150 million, and $200
million. Not to sound like an infomercial, but that’s not all! The Avengers now hold the records for highest grosses for a Saturday ($69.6 million) and Sunday ($57 million), along with the highest per-theater average for a nation wide release at $47,698 per theater. But on the bright side for you Potter fans, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 (2011) still holds the opening day record with $91 million.

Now, the question is, what other records will Marvel’s The Avengers take this week at the box office? Will it reach highest box office of all time? Will The Dark Knight Rises claim any of these records come July? Only time will tell… and Beyond the Marquee with our new weekly article “Box Office Monday.” You’re probably wondering why it’s Monday and not Sunday. Well, that’s easy, because the actual box office numbers aren’t released till Monday. Sunday’s box office numbers are just predictions. We could give you those predictions, but we would rather give you accurate and up-to-date information.

Having grossed over $370 million domestically and $1 billion worldwide, The Avengers hold the records for best second weekend, fastest movie to reach $300 million and $350 million, and highest eight-day, nine-day, and ten-day grosses. The avengers did fall 50% from last week though. But with these numbers, who cares? […]
