NO PLACE poster

No Place on Earth, A Compelling Documentary (Film Review)

We will probably never know all the stories connected to the WWII Holocaust, but this one shatters the heart and awakens the mind to the danger and heroism that came about during the Nazi regime. It’s called No Place On Earth a documentary with dramatic interpretation of what took place in 1942 when 38 Ukrainian Jews were forced to live in a dark cavern for 511 days to escape death.  Taught, terrifying and unconscionable the well directed movie plays to all faiths and ethnic groups as are reminder that something like this should never happen again.

PAIN GAIN post

Pain & Gain, A Dark Comedy (Film Review)

Continuing to make exciting films Michael Bay releases Pain & Gain a movie that’s reminiscent of his storytelling with the wild and enthusiastic Bad Boys, but far from his explosive films like Transformers and Armageddon. Here he takes you on a roller coaster ride with a true crime story, a dark comedy that gets so absurd I found myself questioning whether the three main characters saw too many movies and thought that even the fictional ones were reality. It’s totally unbelievable, but in today’s world I guess most anything can happen.

Mud-OneSht

MUD, An Obsessive Love Story (Film Review)

It’s time for Matthew McConaughey to step up and do what he does best and in Mud he nails the role.  The cool little Indie has all the trappings of a good film including, a taught plot, good direction and a couple of kids that can act to boot. If you like movies that ease into the plot and hook you before you know it, rush out to see Mud.

AFI LIfetime Achievement Award winner Harrison Ford and Beyond the Marquee's Jon Donahue

AFI LIfetime Achievement Award winner Harrison Ford and Beyond the Marquee’s Jon Donahue at “AFI’s Night at the Movies” event in Hollywood

Last night saw a star-studded event in Tinsel-Town at the “Target Presents the American Film Institutes (AFI) Night at the Movies” at the famed Arclight Theater in Hollywood. A dozen of Tinsel-Town’s finest were on hand to help introduce and talk about their experiences with the iconic and successful films they were a part of.

Among some of the line-up on hand were Cher (Moonstruck), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) and Harrison Ford (Blade Runner: The Final Cut). Beyond the Marquee’s own Jon Donahue was present for this event and even had a few minutes to talk to fellow actor Harrison Ford before the film started. In addition to being the 28th recipient of the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, Ford addressed the audience and talked about some of the aspects of the film that fans have enjoyed over the years – from practical sets to the Director’s cut of the film (minus the narration).

Harrison even addressed the age old question on whether Rick Deckard (Harrison’s character in the movie) was a replicant himself.  “I was moved to asked Ridley whether or not he thought that the character I was playing was a Replicant. Well, I never got a straight answer. Which is okay, I guess. But I thought it was important that the audience be able to have a human representative on screen, somebody that they could have an emotional understanding of. Ridley didn’t think that was all that important.” said Ford.
