Steven Seagal is HARD TO KILL – (Blu-Ray Review)

HARD TO KILL on Blu-Ray

Ok, I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not the biggest Steven Seagal fan.  I wouldn’t even go as far as to use the word ‘fan’, but I have to say, I AM a fan of cheesy 80’s action flicks.  Chuck Norris was my hero, as I pretty much saw everything that he made back in the day (Long live Lone Wolf McQuade!). I just never acquired a taste for Seagal’s out of shape, whispering dialogue, pony-tailed brand of action.  But, with a decent script & direction, he managed to crank out a few memorable entries.  I really enjoyed, Out For Justice, Under Siege, and Marked For Death and was (and have been since it opened in theatres) entertained by Hard To Kill, now available on Blu-Ray from our friends at Warner Home Video.  Yes, I realize that this flick was released in 1990, BUT it was MADE in the 80’s, and it seriously wreaks of that awesome decade!

Sean Connery’s OUTLAND (Blu-Ray Review)

OUTLAND now on Blu-Ray

HBO in the early 1980’s.  It was a major part of my childhood (& so was MTV – remember when they used to play music videos?) “R” rated films were shown “only at night”, and that meant that my parents were home.  I remember asking (begging) my father if I could stay up and watch the Home Box Office premiere of, Caddyshack, because I loved Chevy Chase (yeah, I watched the “Not Ready For Prime Time Players” on SNL when I was 9 or 10 years old!)  After listening to me go on & on about how cool the gopher looked in the commercials,  he agreed to let me watch it with him.  Excitedly, I constructed a make-shift movie theatre box-office (by cutting two holes out of a cardboard box & taping the HBO guide to the front of it, featuring Caddyshack) & then charged my Father fifty cents to enter the living room.  Well, I think my Dad got his money’s worth, I had fifty cents … and I got to see boobs.

TWINS OF EVIL (Blu-Ray Review)

Twins of Evil

New from Synapse Films, in a Blu-Ray+DVD combo pack, comes another entry in its Hammer Horror Collection: Twins of Evil, featuring Playboy Centerfold models, Mary and Madeleine Collinson, in the titular roles. The 1971 Hammer classic is part of the Karnstein Trilogy, along with The Vampire Lovers and Lust for a Vampire.

Downtown Cinema (with Malone) Reviews NEXT OF KIN (Blu-Ray Review)

“NEXT OF KIN” AVAILABLE ON BLU-RAY 7/17 FROM WARNER HOME VIDEO

What’s up, Doc?  This afternoon, I decided to have some good ol’ fashioned fried chicken for lunch.  I don’t eat it that often… maybe once a year and it wasn’t anything special; from the grocery store, not KFC or Popeye’s.  Hell, I don’t even know what’s special about KFC or Popeye’s.  Do people in Kentucky or Louisiana make better chicken or eat it more often than the folks in, say, Missouri?  I don’t even really care about the state-specifics, but I do know that I turn into a big, greasy, sticky, finger-lickin’ Southern gentleman when I’m eating the stuff.  It’s like sense memory from another life or maybe I just watch too many commercials.  Either way, it’s comfort food that makes you feel good as it knocks some years off of your life.  So it just felt right to pop in the *new* Blu-Ray release of 1989’s Next of Kin (now available from Warner Home Video).  With a gallon of oil dripping from my chin, I was ready to watch Patrick Swayze and his Good ‘Ol Boys do some harm on the Chicago underworld.
