Greetings BTM readers, red-carpet reporter Allison Tate-Cortese here. The National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) and Expedia have co-sponsored a video contest for all NFFTY alumni to make a 3 minute video about the inspiration and life lessons to be learned through travel. I did and now its competing to get enough votes to be in the top ten so that then the judges vote from those ten on who will win the top 3 prizes: 1st is $10,000 2nd is $5,000 and 3rd is $2,500. So because this is their format I need to get enough votes to even be considered for the prizes, which is where I am hoping all of our Beyond the Marquee readers can come in. BTM Hoverboard Episodes to be Showcased by MATTEL at 2012’s Comic-Con: San Diego!

Beyond the Marquee is honored to have been asked by Mattel to have a presence at their booth for Comic-Con 2012 in San Diego (July 12-15th). If visiting Comic-Con, drop by the Mattel booth #3029 and look for the monitors showcasing our Exclusive Hoverboard episodes, along with the infamous video of Robert Zemeckis from the late 80’s claiming that Hoverboards were real.

Last March, Beyond the Marquee premiered two exclusive web series episodes in conjunction with BTTF.com and Mattel’s MattyCollector.com. The episodes focused on the upcoming release of Matty Collector’s replica Hoverboards from the Back to the Future films. Not surprisingly, the videos were a huge viral hit with Back to the Future fans and the online community, garnering a lot of attention. Hey, People love Hoverboards!

You know Doc, it’s easy to shred a bad movie… especially online. Plenty of cyber critics tear into pictures they deem lousy with the ferocity of a lynch mob and it’s really unfair. Movies are difficult to make and they (typically) require the passions of a collective group willing to dedicate weeks, months and even years of their lives. The Departed is currently the king of the hill on my favorite movies list and I’m sure I’m not alone in my choice. My least favorite is Black Knight, a film I find so awful, I deliberately watch bad movies in search of something worse. But as much as I despise it, I can guarantee Black Knight is somebody’s favorite flick. So while I’ll vocalize my disdain for such drivel, I won’t go overboard in pissing all over someone’s favorite movie. Now, take Freak Dance, the “new” feature film from Upright Citizens Brigade. It’s coming to DVD on 7/10 from Image Entertainment and while it doesn’t quite dethrone the Knight, it’s not worth a minute of your time.

Savages, Welcome to Drug Wars (Film Review)

If you are looking for gut wrenching excitement in a movie with a brilliant cast and a creative storyline then choose Savages, this year’s most powerful action filled drama to date. Intense and intriguing, the film has scenes so extreme that I felt myself gripping the theatre arm rests. If you think the drug wars were crazy in No Country for Old Men, Traffic or even cable’s “Breaking Bad”, they are scuffles compared to this film.

Walt Disney Pictures has released their teaser poster for OZ: The Great and Powerful, directed by Sam Raimi. Scheduled for release March 8, 2013, OZ is the story of the magical land’s most famous ruler (James Franco) and his journey as he goes from Kansas commoner to the powerful wizard and the bevy of witches he encounters along the way played by Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis. The teaser poster seems to show Professor Marvel’s balloon descending upon the emerald city of OZ on the tail end of a blustery storm of turmoil and debris (and a well placed broomstick).
