Hollywood’s not out of ideas. You’d never know it by the constant barrage of sequels, remakes, adaptations and reboots theaters are hit with year after year. Sure original stuff peeks out now and again, but studios play it safe with tried and true brands – because they make money. Sometimes they’re lousy (Battleship) sometimes they just nail it (Star Trek). Either way, the trend isn’t going to stop anytime soon. On June 26, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases their latest big screen adaptation of a small screen favorite: 21 Jump Street. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum star as two undercover cops sent back to high school to break up a drug ring. And if you, too, can pretend to be a teenager again, you’re in for some pretty big laughs.

I watch a lot of “bad” movies. This is mostly my choice, as I enjoy kitsch, sleaze, schlock, shock and many other forms of “garbage” that folks usually thumb their noses at. It’s a guilty pleasure that’s healthier than, say, binging on junk food – though that’s easily my second vice. But if you’ve eaten nothing but Doritos and ice cream for the last two days, your body craves a nice clean salad. Well, on June 29th, Dreamworks serves up People Like Us, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci’s nutrient dense offering that had me leaving the theater feeling nourished and satisfied. And to be perfectly honest, I’m kind of surprised.

Devotees of Pixar’s films know that being in the theater well before the feature starts is a wise idea. This time around, they won’t be disappointed when they’ll be treated to the little animated masterpiece La Luna.

For those familiar with Pixar shorts, La Luna was nominated for an Oscar in the animated shorts category earlier this year. The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore ended up taking the trophy home that night, but that didn’t diminish what a wonderful film La Luna truly is. It premiered on June 6, 2011 at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France, and screened at other film festivals afterwards. This made it qualify for the 2011 Oscar category.

On June 8th the Dark Knight Rises Interactive Display made its debut Nationwide in Theaters around the Country. The opportunity to become Bane, Catwoman or the Dark Knight and spread your message to the citizens of Gotham City is all due to the creative geniuses over at Midnight Oil Creative in collaboration with Warner Bros for the upcoming film that hits theaters next month. Beyond the Marquee’s own Joseph Vega dropped by the Midnight Oil headquarters top-secret production facility in Burbank CA to learn first hand how this Augmented Reality display works from owner Brandon Gabriel.

Beyond the Marquee will be sitting down this weekend with legendary cartoon voice actor June Foray to discuss her newly-awarded Emmy, as well as reflect on almost 70 years of animated character voice work.

June’s impressive resume spans 7 decades including such memorable characters as Granny from the Tweety Bird & Sylvester Looney Tunes, Jokey Smurf, Rocky the Flying Squirrel from Rocky and Bullwinkle, Talky Tina from Twilight Zone, Grammi Gummi, Witch Hazel and Cindy Lou Who to name just a few.

A BRAVE NEW WORLD FOR PIXAR

BRAVE in Theaters June 22nd

Brave represents many firsts for Pixar Studios. It’s their first feature with a female protagonist, first directed by a female, first period piece, first with nudity (seriously). I’m pretty sure it’s the first with a gay character (check out how the witch’s male crow describes a Scotsman) and I’m definitely sure it’s the first original story since Up.

Nothing against Toy Story 3 or Cars 2 (no, plenty against Cars 2 — it was a major letdown), but it’s nice to have the Pixar folks again doing what they do best – unveiling amazing new worlds. This time its ye auld Scotland in the Braveheart days. (What is it with Scottish films and the word “brave” in the title?)
