MR. STAY PUFT — Meeting the Man inside the Marshmallow Man

Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary

Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary

I’m not one to get starstruck.

That’s not true.

I get starstruck as much as the next film buff, but I keep it internal so as to remain “professional.” To paraphrase Bill Murray (from Quick Change, not Ghostbusters), “I’m the starstruck on the inside kind, I guess.”

Every now and then, however, the internal becomes external, no more so than the time I met one of my childhood idols. One of my heroes of the silver screen. One of the inspirations for westward ho-ing my Bostonian butt all the way to Hollywood.

Spielberg… Zemeckis… Jimmy Stewart… Walt Disney…

All iconic geniuses of American cinema, through and through, but none had quite the same impact on my formative years as… the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Unlike those other icons, I’ve actually met Mr. Stay Puft, more precisely the man who played him three decades ago in the first Ghostbusters movie. What were the circumstances to bring about such a fortuitous encounter? How did I come to not just meet the Marshmallow Man, but also work with him? Why, I remember it as if it were yesteryear…

June Foray’s Animated Life — at Age 97

Celebrated voice actress, June Foray, turned an amazing 97 years-old yesterday on September 18th, and we here at Beyond the Marquee are not surprised by that accomplishment at all. We had the distinct pleasure of visiting with June in her home about two years ago to interview her about her fascinating career as the voice of so many beloved cartoon characters. Since that time, she has been a great friend to Beyond the Marquee.

We thought our fans would like to to take a look at the interview and article we posted awhile back about this lady who shows no signs of stopping her animated life anytime soon. Enjoy!

For legendary voice actress, June Foray, everyday life can be very animated … and we’re not exaggerating when we say that!  95 years young, Foray continues to be an active presence in the world of voice-over work in Hollywood.  Chances are very likely that you’ve heard her at some point in your lifetime whether it be on radio, television, movies or even your playroom as a kid … and you probably didn’t even know it.  She has given voice to a multitude of favorite animated characters ranging from Lucifer the Cat in Walt Disney’s Cinderella to Granny in the Sylvester and Tweety Looney Tunes shorts to Rocky the Flying Squirrel in the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.  Throw in several Hanna-Barbera characters, some beloved Christmas specials, a voice appearance in JAWS (yep!), a spot on an early episode of The Simpsons and even a presence as the voice of the famed Chatty Cathy doll, and you’ll just be scratching the surface of some of June Foray’s work throughout the years.

“This is Where I Leave You” a Family on the Edge (Film Review)

Working with an extremely good cast This is Where I Leave You opens in theaters for an adult audience.  While the film does entertain, no doubt about it, it’s hard to get over the feeling that I’ve seen it before.  Not that the trailer gives it all away, but the film August: Osage County still sticks in my mind being one of my 2013 favorites.  However, although it’s very similar in the storyline, this film dishes out most of the animosity with a side of comedy and romance rather than a serious tone.  With adult couples missing in action from theaters due to a glut of action, adventure and crime thrillers, this dramedy should get their attention.
