It’s hard to top perfection and Lady and the Tramp really ranks high on the charts as one of Disney’s best animated films in the over 50 titles in its library. Yet, the company is notorious for cranking out direct to video sequels, some are great and carry on a sense of continuity in both quality and story, and then there’s others like Lady and the Tramp II: Scamps Adventure that don’t quite hit the mark.  It’s a cute story continuing the adventures of the pups we grew to love, but now watching the adventures of their offspring, in particular, Lady and Tramp’s rebellious son Scamp who proves that mischief and rebel rousing may be inherited after all. Though Scamp runs away to find his true calling, he discovers that things aren’t always what they seem and one needs to be careful what they wish for. It’s not a bad film, but the story drags and at times it feels too much like a re-hash of the original just modernized with new cast with slightly different outcomes. My 3 and 4 year old daughters love this just as much as the original so it’s only the adults who are the Disney collectors and fans who need to question if this film should have a place in their home library.

THE PICTURE: Not much to complain about here. I mean it really does look good, sharp, lean, strong colors, video looks pristine most of the time and for a direct to video it ranks pretty good in quality. You may say, well what else would you expect from Disney, but there have been cases of less than sufficient releases and conversions.

THE SOUND: 7.1 HD Dolby Theater Sound on this one. But it doesnt do much to enhance the film’s audio. Everything sounds great, nice and clear, sharp and strong, the music and dialogue all evenly balanced. Some good lightning effects and junkyard clutter, but not a lot really to note that bring a notable smile to my face in the way of cleverness or extra detailed effort by the sound engineers.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

    • From Tramp to Scamp  A fun behind the scenes feature of the making-of the film. Seemed a bit longer than it needed to be for a direct to video release but if you’re a fan of the film, it will be sure to delight.
    • Audio Commentary: The director, animation director and co-director/producer are all on board to tell you about their stories, challenges and proud moments of this film
    • Puppy Trivia Track : my girls liked this pop up trivia feature about animals
    • Sing-Along Songs 5 songs to sing to with titles if you don’t know (or have forgotten the words)
  • Pluto Classic Walt Disney Shorts Expect nothing but cross branding to some long forgotten but always entertaining dog themed Disney classics like “Pluto Junior,” “Bone Trouble” and “Pluto’s Kid Brother.”

CLOSING THOUGHTS: I would have much rather had this a 2 parter combo pack with Lady and the Tramp then as a separate video which is taking up one more spot on my shelf, if the kids didn’t enjoy this so much, well it may not be there. Not a terrible direct to video sequel, some fun moments and lessons to be learned. Try it out if you’ve never seen it before, Lady and the Tramp II: Scamps Adventure may just dig a hole in your heart.
