Beyond the Marquee: The Web-Series (Episode 2) – The Amazing Worlds of Dylan Cole

When you think of famous movie poster designers or motion picture matte painters, some names spring to mind; Drew Struzan, Peter Ellenshaw, John Alvin, and Albert Whitlock just to name a few. Now joining these legendary artists is Dylan Cole.

Dylan Cole

Dylan, a native Californian and UCLA graduate has over the past decade, built quite a creative career for himself. His talents have made him famous for his visionary concept art, detailed matte paintings and most recently his eye-opening poster designs. Besides dabbling on video-game and commercial projects, Dylan has worked on such Hollywood box office blockbusters such as; Avatar, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Superman Returns, Tron Legacy, The Chronicles of Narnia, Alice in Wonderland and dozens upon dozens more.

One would think that an artist’s studio is littered with sketches strewn across a desk next to cups of paintbrushes and colored pencils upon a paint smudged desk, but Dylan works productively in his well kept man-cave on his large sized Mac computers. Surrounded by a library full of science fiction books, original framed Empire Strikes Back storyboards hung on the wall, a replica sword from Lord of the Rings displayed in all it’s glory he works away. With his Ginger cat “Cringer” sitting at his feet, this comic-book loving, 80’s pop-culture kid at heart takes us behind the scenes of the creative process and challenges of some of his most recent work.

Resident Beyond the Marquee movie-poster enthusiast and Marquee’ologist; Courtney Sampson files this exclusive report from Dylan’s home studio in Southern California.

Dylan continues to work on some huge projects for the studios, as well as his own personal project a digital kids book full of his illustrations. We’ll be sure to follow up with him once that’s ready to make it’s debut next Spring.
