STEEL MAGNOLIAS Blossoms Onto Limited Edition Blu-ray!

Now Available on Blu-Ray!

“Miss Truvy, I promise that my personal tragedy will not interfere with my ability to do good hair.”

Before Desperate Housewives, The Gilmore Girls, and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, there were the strong women of Truvy’s Beauty Parlor in Louisiana.

As part of Twilight Time’s Limited Blu-ray releases, Steel Magnolias makes it’s way onto the high-def format and still holds an emotional punch.

The late 80’s were a great time for ensemble films and this is one of the best.

With an all-star ensemble cast of strong actors including Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley McClain, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, Tom Skerritt, Sam Shepard and Julia Roberts   nominated for her first Academy Award for the role, the film takes place around highlighted holidays and celebrations over the course of four years.

The cast is absolutely perfect. We are immediately caught up in the chaos of these women’s lives as they prepare for an old fashioned wedding. Through the intercutting and introduction during the preparations for the big day, we learn their stories, their history, and their solid relationships with each other.

Adapted from his stage play, writer Robert Harling crafts characters and situations so rich, you will find yourself really engrossed in these people’s cinematic lives. And the dialogue is as fresh and funny today as it was in 1989. You are reminded of just how many of the lines have infiltrated popular culture.

Director Herbert Ross (The Goodbye Girl, Footloose) once again proves that he is a master craftsman, orchestrating a film that skillfully balances the trials and tragedies of these women while still providing hope. John Alonzo’s cinematography captures the perfect mood of each scene, both grand and intimate, from a huge southern weeding to the confines of a hospital room.

The film has never looked better. With a fantastic transfer, the colors are as rich and vibrant as the hometown locale.

The musical score is presented as an isolated DTS-HD track and is simply one of the most lush of 80’s orchestrations.

A commentary track featuring Director Herbert Ross is a must listen, as the skilled director provides insight and anecdotes about the beloved film.
