Get Hooked On BAIT 3-D – (Blu-ray Review)

Now available on Blu-ray from Anchor Bay!

When I first saw the cover art for this little sunken treasure, I thought for sure that this was going to be yet another low-budget, badly CG’d fish story that belongs on the SyFy channel. Well, I am happy to report that after viewing this flick tonight with some friends, it turns out that Bait 3-D isn’t half bad! It’s actually a fun popcorn flick that, if not taken too seriously, you and your buddies will find yourselves having a good time…

Just to be crystal clear, I’m not saying this film is in the same league as JAWS or Deep Blue Sea for that matter, but it’s heads and fish tails above last years dismal and highly forgettable, Shark Night 3-D. THIS I guarantee.

The plot is simple; a group of shoppers are trapped in a flooded grocery store after a devastating tsunami (is there any other kind?) hits the coast of Australia. They soon discover that they have more problems than just staying afloat…two twelve foot sharks are shopping the aisles for fresh meat!

Featuring some decent effects, Bait 3-D brings us some of the same cheesy (in a good way) fun that Piranha 3-D gave us two years ago. Speaking of the third dimension, I was really impressed with the 3-D quality of this disc! From the opening frame we are treated to a razor sharp, crystal clear picture that truly accentuates and compliments the depth of the image. Now, It’s not the best 3-D I’ve ever seen, but I really wasn’t expecting it to be this good! My favorite 3-D moments in the film revolved around two survivors, well three if you count the dog, sitting helplessly in their submerged car as a man-eating shark slowly swims by their windows. Good, scary stuff.

Fresh meat 50% off

How do the sharks look? Well, the good news is that there are some very convincing mechanical sharks that are unfortunately combined with some not so convincing CGI ones. However, I was so impressed with the mechanical man-eaters that were created for the film, that the poor CGI guys didn’t bother me that much…in fact, it just added to the cheese! So kudos to the practical effects team! The gore effects are nicely done too. Horror fans shouldn’t be disappointed…I know I wasn’t.

Bait 3-D is no slouch in the audio department, either. Featuring a submersive 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack, this Blu-ray package from Anchor Bay will flood your home theatre speakers with awesomeness!

Cleanup on aisle 7!

In closing, if you can get past some of the bad acting (and a somewhat predictable ending) and embrace the cheesy, gory, action packed fun that is Bait 3-D, you’ll have a good time. After all, you’re watching a movie who’s cover art features a shark swimming down a grocery store isle!

I was pretty surprised how good this was too. We saw the 3D version on my son’s Hopper last night and it was horrifyingly terrific! I don’t like going to movie theaters so this was the first 3D movie I had seen and it really had an impact on the whole film. I agree that this was no Jaws, but I think they got close. I was talking to this guy that works at DISH with me and he said that he was actually attacked by a shark in Mexico. I told him I would avoid Bait if I were him.
