Django Unchained on Blu-ray

First off, let me say that I love Tarantino movies. LOVE…and his newest film, Django Unchained,  is by far one of his absolute best. It truly is a fun time at the movies…or at home on a beautiful new Blu-ray set from Anchor Bay Entertainment!

Set in the South two years before the Civil War, Django Unchained stars Academy Award ®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with a German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christolph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.

Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award®-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz rouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award®-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival…

The cast is, simply put, at the top of their game. Leonardo DiCaprio truly deserved all the praise he garnered for his performance here, he really lit up the screen as Candie. But I am truly happy that the great Christolph Waltz took home the prize, because from the moment he rides onto the screen, he’s an absolute joy to watch! Samuel L Jackson chews up the scenery and looks like he’s having as much fun as we are watching, and Jamie Foxx, in my opinion,  has never been better. The Tarantino’s script, direction, the music, cinematography, everything…all beautifully done and so much fun! It’s great to see films that aren’t afraid to take chances. Quentin has never played by Hollywood’s rules, and thank God for that!

How’s the picture and sound?

The Blu-ray looks as spectacular as the film itself….truly fitting. The images are sharp, and the colors are nice and saturated. This Blu-ray presentation honors and highlights Robert Richardson’s sweeping cinematography in Tarantino’s vision of the old west!

Honestly, what truly blew me away was the 5.1 DTS HD-MA sound on this disc! If you have a decent sound system like I do, you are in for a real treat, as ALL of your speakers will get a true work out! Gun shots fire from different directions, crickets sing all around you at night, horses gallop right by your head…you’ll swear you’re back in time, because the sound-mix is so immersive. The film’s magnificent and eclectic score sounds just dandy and my ears are still humming the Django tune as I type this! If you can’t tell by now, I am truly satisfied with the home theatre experience of Django Unchained here…an absolute joy. You’ll truly hear and know why the film received an Oscar nod for it’s sound editing.
