Review: Ok, I’ve been slacking, while the rest of the BTM team was out seeing Elysium this weekend I was working in my garage, but let me tell you this…after looking at this book this afternoon when the post-man delivered a copy to the office…WOW…I’m going tonight!!! No lie, if the book is 1/2 as good as the movie then I’m in for a treat. At 175 pages this is nothing that was just slapped together to make a quick buck. This books is packed from tip to tip of the pages with a wealth of production art and photos, a foreword by Neill Blomkamp including the input of legendary designer Syd Mead (Blade Runner, Tron). I love that Neill is a fan of “Art of” books and he even mentions that in his foreword “Anything that approximated an “art of” book, or even behind the scenes photos, were always my favorite as a child because they had all the wonders of cinema and secrets behind its creation. It was like peeking behind the curtain, and seeing all of the ingredients that culminated together to manufacture the huge magic trick that is a final film” And that sums up the 175 pages and then some of this book. The detail that went into this film is quite evident in the production art that paints a picture of a multi-layered levels of the film from the impoverished overpopulated wasteland of Earth to the wealth and cleanliness of an off world paradise of a man-made space station called Elysium. Robots, Tattoos, Cities, Exo-Suits, Transport shuttles, Weapons, Future technology, it looks like every piece of concept design was crafted with precision to illustrate the film and it’s all laid out in an easy to read and visually stunning layout. I flipped thru the book and was like …Wow, (flip), Wow, (flip), WOW!!! I was sold and will be catching the 9:30 showing at the AMC downtown tonight. I’ve attached some pictures at the end of the post of just some of the cool images that stood out.
