“GET HARD” (Film Review & Trailer)

GET HARD poster imdb

Wacky, Madcap and insane, but what else would you expect when Will Farrell and Kevin Hart team up for a movie. The two outlandish comedians put Get Hard over the top in this irreverent comedy that should keep audiences laughing way after they leave the theater. That is unless you are easily offended by all the rude, nude and crude.

Hedge fund Advisor James King (Will Farrell) has made millions for Martin Investments making him the top money generator for the firm. He has been known to rake in multi-millions on any given day for the Wealthrop Fund he manages. He’s done so well for Martin (Craig T. Nelson) his boss that he has endorsed James’ engagement to his daughter Alissa (Alison Brie). On a day when he has brought in another big haul for the firm, James gets made a partner.

Then there’s Darnell (Kevin Hart) a hardworking man with a family trying to make ends meet in a ghetto. His dream is to expand his Hollywood Luxury Bubbles carwash company so he can send his daughter to a school that’s not filled with gang bangers. All he needs to accomplish this involves the confirmation by the bank for a loan.

The two are complete opposites, but when James gets accused of stock fraud and sentenced to San Quentin he has only one option left. He has to get his car wash man Darnell to teach him how to be a convict among some of the most murderous inmates. He offers Darnell $30 thousand for his help. The film goes on with some hilarious dialogue and situations providing entertainment for mostly males and those who are fans of the two most popular comedians.

Get Hard is actually a lot of fun when you tune out the slurs and idiotic remarks. Hey it’s a satire after all. In fact the only reason you probably want to see the two comics together comes with their brand of comedy. More so Will Farrell who’s not afraid to lay it all on the line, even getting naked for the gardener, and Oh Yeah the audience. He may be lame to some, offensive to others and just plain insulting, but that’s his persona and it’s expected for most his films.

Am I surprised that Kevin Hart teamed up with him to make this film. Not at all as Hart takes the stage with his own brand of chronic fast talking that most of the time upstages Farrell. Farrell’s the stooge in this one with Hart trying to make the best of the decadent outpouring. You can see the two are having fun as I caught Hart in a forced grimace a few times trying not to laugh. When you go to see these guys just hang lose and enjoy the clowning and silliness, because it may be some time before you see them together again on the big screen.

Get Hard has been rated R by the MPAA for pervasive crude and sexual content and language, some graphic nudity, and drug material. The subject matter and profuse use of ethnic diatribe may be offense to those who are serious minded. To compare think the film “Trading Places” with a modern twist.

FINAL ANALYSIS: A very funny film that uses comedy intended to embarrass and offend. (B-)
