Just so you know, I’m not going to review the flick, you’ve heard enough about it already and therefore know it kicks ass. It also won 5 Academy Awards last Sunday, so why do you need ME to tell you it’s super awesome?! Just the experience of watching Martin Scorsese’s masterful, magical “HUGO” in my living room last night, in the third dimension, brings a smile to my face even as I type this.
In advance, I have a 55” Plasma 3-D television and 7.1 THX surround sound in my home theatre. Yes, I’m serious about movies. It’s in my blood…my DNA. The magic of the movies has made me the movie nerd I am today and I wouldn’t have it any other way. And that’s just one reason I LOVE “HUGO”…it was made because of the love for movies. Another reason I LOVE “HUGO” is that it’s beautiful to look at. REALLY beautiful. It’s eye candy pure & simple. Yes, the story will move you and have you look at film in a different way, but damn, I love the way this movie looks & feels. Gorgeous.
From the first frame, we hear clocks ticking coming from behind us, courtesy of the surround speakers. Then…the 3-D opening shot of beautiful Paris will take your breath away. You will probably think that it’s actually snowing in your living room (courtesy of the amazing 3-D combined with any alcohol that you may be consuming). The first time we are taken into the train station, steam and smoke fills the foreground, as hurried passengers rush about the frame in the third dimension there is so much depth, it made my jaw drop in awe…it was so realistic, every time the camera would zoom through the steam, my friends and I would cough. Haha, we’re funny. And it never got old…well, kinda.
Now, I saw “Hugo” in the theatre upon it’s release & I swore it was the most amazing 3-D I had ever seen for a flick since “The Polar Express”…well, the blu ray incarnation of this treasure even blows THAT experience out of the water! It’s that good.
Sadly, it’s NOT a perfect presentation. There is some heavy ghosting at times during some shots, but they are few and far between and to be expected, after all, 3-D hasn’t been perfected yet. Don’t be fooled, “Hugo” seems made for 3-D. It was even shot in the third dimension, not post converted like so many 3-D films are today.
The sound? Fully immersive. From the ticking clocks, trains choo-chooing around you, to the beautiful, enveloping score (which should have won the Oscar!), “Hugo” is a sonic winner.
Do yourself a favor. Chances are, if you own a 3-D television and have surround sound, you MUST love movies, right? Well then? What are you waiting for? Go out to your favorite Blu-Ray dealer and pick up your 3-D copy of “Hugo”… a movie about movies for movie lovers everywhere.
I just saw this film on Blueray non 3d- I noticed lots of white snow or flies flying near the characters during several shots, especially near end of film, was this part of the film?
really nice write up felt like a buddy was giving me his honest opinion on the quality, I may buy this for my household. thanks.
