HEAT POST 1

The Heat, A Wacky Buddy Comedy (Film Review)

One of the better comedies to be released this year, The Heat has a lot going for it with a fine cast, good comedic writing and some nice direction from Paul Feig who gave us Bridesmaids. Of course it doesn’t hurt to have Melissa McCarthy one of the top comics in the business as your co-star. If you’re looking for a lot of laughs from a plot with a lot of crude behavior than make it a point to check out The Heat.

Beyond the Marquee: The Web Series (Ep.48) – 100 Years of Paramount Studios Costumes!

On June 15, 2013,  Los Angeles Confidential and Acura celebrated 100 years of Paramount Pictures through the lens of fashion and film on Paramount’s New York Street back lot on the heels of an in-depth editorial feature published in the Spring issue.

Guests clad in summer cocktail attire perused storefronts complete with costumes from classic and modern films, many of which had never before been displayed. Beyond the Marquee’s own, Steve Czarnecki, was on hand to talk to the Paramount Studios prop and costume archivist and costumer restorer responsible for this showcase of some of Hollywood’s most historic wardrobes.

This week at the Beyond the Marquee offices, we got in another highly anticipated “Art of” book from our good pals at TITAN Books. Now available to own, it’s WORLD WAR Z: The Art of the Film and this one is a bit non-traditional from the other “Art of” books we have reviewed from Titan in the past. Based on the novel by Max Brooks and now a major motion picture from Paramount Studios, this book, coming in at close to 160 pages, features conceptual art for the film and the screenplay written by Matthew Michael Carnahan, Drew Goddard and Damon Lindelof. The Art of Product Placement in Movies

Wayne's World - Pizza Hut product placement

Wayne’s World – Pizza Hut product placement

The difference between a subtle comment and a boorish remark is what separates a gentleman from a jerk, a leader from a tyrant, and an effective promotional message from shameless commercialism. This fact was never plainer to me than after reviewing the 2012 Brandcameo award winners, an annual review of how well Hollywood mixes its mercenary impulses with its devotion to effective story-selling. Click ahead to read about the clever and sometimes blatant use of companies product placement in some of Hollywood’s most unforgettable films.

Watch Actor Matt Smith’s Farewell Message to his co-workers and fans of DOCTOR WHO…

It’s been almost a month now since the out-of-nowhere announcement that actor Matt Smith would be stepping down from his role as the 11th Doctor in the 50 year old hit BBC show. After 4 years as one of the most popular and most marketed of all the time-lords, the looming question on Whovians minds have been…who’s going to be the 12th? Well until we find out that answer towards the end of the Summer, and fans pick up the pieces of the upcoming loss of Matt Smith from the show (after the Christmas episode later this year), we are at least treated to a unique..farewell of sorts to his co-workers and fans from Matt himself. Shot in Detroit, on location for Ryan Goslings new directorial film “How to Catch a Monster”, sporting a much shorter hair-style, Matt delivers his message…twice.

World War Z, A Thrilling Roller Coaster Ride (Film Review)

The opening sequence in the zombie thriller World War Z gets so intense that I white knuckled as I grabbed the arms of my seat, the film’s that shocking.  These 15 minutes alone are worth the price of admission.  It’s like watching a Roland Emmerich film on steroids (Day After Tomorrow, 2012) only more daunting.  If you like films that are non-stop, compelling, gripping and terrify at every turn than this movie should do the trick.
