Happy 20th Anniversary GROUNDHOG DAY…the Movie.

Well it’s Groundhog Day…Again!

Believe it or not, it’s been two decades since the release of 1993’s Groundhog Day, one of my top three favorite Bill Murray comedies of all time (Ghostbusters and the underrated Quick Change being the other two).  I sure don’t believe it.  I feel like egocentric weatherman Phil Connors himself, wondering where all the time went.  Actually, that’s the exact opposite of Phil’s plight, who — instead of advancing through time at a rapid pace — is cursed to repeat the same day over and over and over again.

Bruce Willis unveils a new Die Hard mural at Twentieth Century Fox Studios

A new mural on Stage 8 at FOX commemorates 1988’s Die Hard

Last night Beyond the Marquee’s own Joe Vega was on-hand at Twentieth Century Fox studios for the unveiling of the new mural painted on Stage 8 of the studio lot. Fox is know for having some fun murals on their sound-stages of some of their iconic productions produced on that lot, from the Empire Strikes Back, to the Simpsons. Now in celebration of the latest Die Hard film A Good Day to Die Hardand in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the original Die Hard movie, Bruce Willis was immortalized for decades to come. With a detonator in hand the countdown began and then Bruce flicked the switch, fireworks exploded and the curtain shrouding the mural dropped down to reveal a classic shot of his character John McClane from the 1988 original film. The crowd cheered, and the explosions and fireworks that accompanied the reveal had car alarms in the lots parking structure beeping and honking for sometime after. On hand were also some of Bruce’s co-stars of the new film Jai Courtney, Yuliya Snigir, Radivoje Bukvic and the director himself, John Moore. The event continued nearby at the Fox Plaza building (aka Nakatomi Plaza) from the original film with food, drinks and dancing. Click ahead to see some of the pics from the event and a cool time-lapse of the creation of the mural.

PETER PAN Soars on Blu-ray (Video Review)

Peter Pan Diamond Edition now Available!

One of the most beloved animated Disney film Peter Pan has been released to home video on Blu-ray for the first time.  The high flying antics of this adventure have been around since 1953, but never as sharp and clear as it was in theaters for your home entertainment system.  It’s not just for kids, especially if you still have that inner child wanting to relive your past. Available in a Diamond Edition 3 Disc combo pack, the movie can be viewed using your Blu-ray, DVD or on the go players.

The Darling family children are true believers in the tale of “Peter Pan”. In search of his shadow Peter visits the Darling residence one night with his friend Tinker Bell the feisty fairy.  When he finds his shadow and starts chasing it around the room he awakens Wendy Darling who welcomes Peter.   Wendy’s amazed by the adventurous Peter and follows him along with her brothers John and Michael to Never Land.

StandUp POSTER

Stand Up Guys, Kick-it One More Time (Film Review)

The film Stand Up Guys being released this weekend in theaters has a nice touch.  It brings together three of the most revered stars in film emulating some of their past acting gigs.  It’s a testimonial to their craft that puts them in front of a camera, aged and changed from their earlier Oscar winning performances yet still commanding the screen. The story brings out the best in each of the three with action, comedy and a murder or two.

Convicted killer Val (Al Pacino) gets picked up by his friend Doc (Christopher Walken) on his release from prison after serving 28 years of his sentence.  During that time he has never disclosed who was involved in a bank robbery gone badly, keeping his two best friends and the mob boss from being indicted for the crimes.  It’s his first day out and Doc wants him to enjoy it even if Val has the feeling that someone has put a hit out to keep him permanently quiet. But, Val has a plan, one that will include Hirsch (Alan Arkin) the third man in their caper trio who has long been waiting for that special moment he can also be free.

bullet POSTER

Bullet to the Head, a Typical Stallone Fight Fest (Film Review)

Not one of Stallone’s best efforts or Walter Hill’s for that matter, Bullet to the Head’s just another partner film with a lot of mayhem and familiar one-liners.  Missing the chemistry of the Stallone of yesteryear, the master of the choreographed fight has become too repetitive accepting too many of the same roles lately.  However, if you would like a few laughs, some Walter Hill chaos and you really don’t care about the quality of the production, then pop  into a theater.  Better still, it will probably play just as well on your big screen TV.

The film opens in New Orleans with hit men Jimmy Bobo (Stallone) and Louis Blanchard (Jon Seda) knocking off  a bad cop from Washington, D.C. for their usual contract fee.  But this time after finishing the job Jimmy and his sidekick get confronted by Keegan (Jason Momoa), a member of the New Orleans mob, with Louis ending up dead. Knowing his number is up Jimmy goes into hiding trying to get to the bottom of the attack on his life.
