Beyond the Marquee Once I Was A Champion (Film Review)
December 13th, 2012
Joseph Vega The road to being the champion is a lot like an arduous battle comprised of highs, lows, and everything in between. The blood, the sweat, the pain, the training – all leading to that fateful moment, when the fight is called and the belt is wrapped about one’s waist. Evan Tanner, once known as the King of Caprock and a champion of the UFC, realized his goal – the Hollywood ending in most people’s eyes. However, the story does not end there. The real fight he faced was a struggle within; a battle he’d contend with for the rest of his life.
Many documentaries tend to focus primarily on the achievements and the series of fortunate opportunities that culminated in one’s success. Once I was a Champion, however, highlights Tanner’s career, while balancing it with the faults and challenges he faced outside the ring, as told by those closest to him. Whether you are a fan of MMA (mixed martial arts) or not, Tanner’s struggle with alcohol is a real and relatable subject with many people.
The Hobbit, a Magnificent Start to a Jackson Trilogy (Film Review)
December 12th, 2012
John Delia
Middle-earth returns to theaters with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and it’s a welcome home to J.R.R. Tolkien’s storytelling. I didn’t realize how much I missed Lord of the Rings on the big screen until seeing this beginning of another Peter Jackson trilogy. If you are a ‘Rings’ lover, then it’s time to put on that special pair of Hobbit feet you bought a few years back and sit yourself in a theater seat for nearly a three hour treat.
Its 60 years in the future when we see Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) writing the story of his past called the Hobbit. The time is somewhere between his return from his adventure to the introduction of Frodo as his nephew tying in the Lord of the Rings saga with his past. As he digresses the first of a new trilogy begins.

December 11th, 2012
Beyond the Marquee Yesterday, the Co-Creator, Writer, and Producer of the Back to the Future trilogy, Bob Gale, shared with Beyond the Marquee a letter addressed to Back to the Future fans around the world. In it, he expressed his disappointment with the produced Hoverboard prop-replica released by Mattel’s high-end Matty Collector toy division.
This morning, he further expounded on his disappointment with the recently released Hoverboard by offering up some side-by-side photo comparisons of the Mattel replica alongside of his original, screen-used props from Back to the Future Part II. He also provided his notes and we’re glad to list them here for you.
The Griswold OLD NAVY Christmas Commercials Continue…
December 10th, 2012
Beyond the Marquee Recently we posted some of the new Old Navy holiday commercials featuring Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo reprising their roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold from the National Lampoon Vacation movies. Now they are back again with commercials promoting their line of “Softest Sweaters” at Old Navy. A running joke with the Vacation films was the changing out of the Griswold’s son and daughter with new actors, this joke gets called out in one of the ads as we get to see a reunion from an assortment of those incarnations. Click ahead to watch both commercials and let us know what you thought…
Bob Gale Not Impressed with Mattel’s Prop-Replica Hoverboard
December 10th, 2012
Beyond the Marquee If you’re going to build a Hoverboard into a collector’s piece, why not do it with some style?
Throughout the first full week of December, the much anticipated Back to the Future Part II prop-replica Hoverboard, produced by Mattel’s high-end Matty Collector brand, began shipping out to eager fans. For many who had been waiting since pre-orders were placed back in March, expectations were set high. Beyond the Marquee had a hand in raising those expectations when we produced two episodes at Mattel’s design studio covering the development of the boards. Our staff were just as enthused when we met with Scott Neitlich, Mattel’s Marketing Manager, who ensured everyone that “it’s going to be perfect, it’s going to be what we wanted, it’s going to be the Hoverboard we’ve been waiting for”. The bar had been raised.
Back to the Future’s Co-Creator/Producer/Writer Bob Gale and Special Effects Supervisor, Michael Lantieri, visited Mattel and were brought in to consult and share screen-used Hoverboard props with the Hoverboard design team. With these authentic visual references fully available, it seemed like a guarantee that all aspects of color, size, shape and sound for constructing a screen-accurate prop replica would be met. As the months rolled by, however, rumors began swirling online that the final product might not live up to those expectations and Mattel, when pressed, remained very quiet on the subject. The company still isn’t saying much.
Unfortunately, the rumors turned out to be 100% accurate and the end result was a Hoverboard that has not lived up to the hopes and dreams of those who shelled out good money for a quality collector’s piece. Fans who purchased the boards are now becoming more vocal online, requesting refunds and lambasting Mattel (with Beyond the Marquee and Bob Gale thrown in the mix a bit). Despite our loyalty to Scott Neitlich and Mattel’s generosity to our site, we don’t blame the critics of these Hoverboards at all and we, as fans of Back to the Future ourselves, do join in the complaints.
Mattel sent us a Hoverboard a few days ahead of their shipping schedule so that we could have a chance to review it. This Hoverboard was fully purchased by us and not given as a free or promotional item from Mattel. We encourage you to view the video and read the review at this link: http://www.beyondthemarquee.com/15970.
Bob Gale, who enthusiastically ordered eight boards for himself, has now publicly come forward to express his concerns to loyal Back to the Future fans who believed, as he did, that this would be the ultimate Hoverboard prop-replica. He shared his views with us and our partner site, BTTF.com, by submitting the following letter.
