The 30th Anniversary GHOSTBUSTERS Donuts Have Arrived at Krispy Kreme and We’ve Tried Them!!! (Movie Themed Food Review)

"We Got One!!!' (Well we got a dozen)

“We Got One!!!’ (Well we got a dozen)

Although our celebratory Ghostbusters Week is over here at Beyond the Marquee, our love for the Ghostbusters movie franchise continues.

In our talks with Sony Marketing about all the great product and promotional tie-ins they’re offering up, we were most excited to hear about Krispy Kreme doing a set of Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary themed doughnuts!

Starting yesterday (Sept 29th) and running thru Oct 31st, you can head to a local participating Krispy Kreme while supplies last and grab yourself a Slimer or Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Krispy Kreme cream-filled doughnut.

We got our first taste test this morning and thought we’d share our review with you…

Oh Slimer, you are in Heaven aren't you!?!?

Oh Slimer, you are in heaven aren’t you!?!?

With a promotion like this, you can’t just go thru the Krispy Kreme Drive-Thru to get the Ghostbusters-themed doughnuts … you have to go into the store and take in all the visual marketing behind it. How often do you get to see window decals of Slimer and Mr. Stay Puft hanging up? Or a 6-foot inflatable Green-Ghost beckoning to you to buy a dozen freshly-made sugary confections?

Your choice of supernatural sugary goodness awaits...

There are 2 distinct looking themed Ghostbuster donuts:

MR. STAY PUFT: A marshmallow Kreme-filled shell topped with white icing, decorated with Stay Puft Marshmallow Man’s familiar face and a sugar piece hat.

SLIMER: A marshmallow Kreme-filled shell topped with white icing, a decorative green slime “splat” inspired by Slimer, and a Ghostbusters ‘No Ghost’ logo sugar piece.

Hmmm…um….Yes Please!!!

No matter what, once you step into a Krispy Kreme (especially if their HOT/NOW Red Neon Sign is on), you’ll be hooked.  On top of that, it’s Fall and the Pumpkin Spice donuts are “in season,” so you’re likely not to leave empty-handed.!

Slimer offers up your choice of Ghostbuster donuts.

The local Krispy Kreme in Burbank, CA was pure eye candy for this Ghostbuster fan. As someone who loves creative and fun movie marketing materials, I was mentally drooling and graciously applauding the effort made to rightfully promote these tasty treats!

The giant inflatable Slimer was fun, the decals lining the window of the glass where you could watch the donuts coming out of the conveyor were eye-catching, the hanging signage was colorful and the posters of Slimer and the themed doughnuts inside and out of the store couldn’t be missed.

If you were in a hurry, it was good to know that you could easily grab a dozen Ghostbuster donuts from the take-out rack (still warm too!), or wait in line and select them (among other wide offerings of flavorful favorites) from the display case.

For the Ghostbuster collector, all of the Krispy Kreme take-out orders come in fantastically visual boxes with the all-familiar “No Ghost” symbol and a cute tag line of “There’s Something Sweet in the Neighborhood”. Well done, SONY Marketing copywriters, well done!

There's Something Sweet, in the Neighborhood!

It was great watching the obvious Ghostbuster fans ahead of me in line ordering the themed donuts, but even more entertaining watching non-fans asking the worker behind the case what was in the donuts (normally Krispy Kreme doughnuts are filled with jelly or custard). One woman reacted when hearing of this fun theme filling with a “Oh, Marshmallow? That sounds like fun, I’ll take 2 of them please.”

I ordered 2 dozen Ghostbusters-themed doughnuts to take into work to share with friends and co-workers and 2 hours after, only 5 donuts remained.

Back at the Studio 23 Production Offices, I sat down with some of the Beyond the Marquee team to try out the doughnuts and see if there were any preferences between the 2 designs.

Surprisingly, the results all seemed to be conclusive unanimously;

1) The donuts were soft and sweet

2) The icing on both tasted creamy and smooth

3) The Marshmallow cream oozed out and was messy fun to eat

4) The doughnut cake was soft and moist

5) The Marshmallow tasted like, but didn’t seem to have the same sticky consistency of real Marshmallow. It seems more in line w/ the texture of a cream.

6) The Ghostbusters logo and Marshmallow Man hat candy was crunchy and sugary, but had no real defined taste other than hard confectionary sugar candy.

Sweet, Gooey and Moist, you don't get much better than that!

Fresh donuts – you don’t get much better than that!

Overall, the donuts are very rich and sweet with their combination of icing, marshmallow, candy piece, etc. Other than the fun, themed design of each doughnut, the two different styles are identical in taste. A dozen of these will run you just over $10.00, but for a nostalgic throw-back to a memorable 30 year-old movie that holds fond memories (and lacked cool promotional tie-ins like this back in 1984), what the heck, indulge yourself (and be sure to get them sooner than later, because they will only become more scarce the closer we get to Halloween!)

Yep, its the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man...

Don’t get too addicted or you may end up looking like a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man!

Throwing a Halloween party? These would be PERFECT! Head over to http://www.krispykreme.com/ to pre-order yours now!
