Beyond the Marquee: the Web Series (Ep.42) – (Pt.1) Drew Struzan Exclusive Interview

One of the most popular movie poster artists of the 20th Century is, hands down, none other than Drew Struzan. For nearly 40 years, he has created some of the most iconic and memorable one-sheets for some of Hollywood’s biggest and highest grossing movies. Attention to detail resulting in amazing art has put Drew’s name at the top of the list for many filmmakers and friends who repeatedly commission him to create posters for their projects … Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Guillermo Del Toro are just a few of the people that have relied on Drew Struzan’s talent throughout the years.

With franchises like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, The Muppets and Harry Potter on his resume, Drew Struzan’s works have evolved the modern movie poster into true art that can be cherished and hung in homes, rather than just existing as marketing material created for movie theaters. With a new documentary about his illustrated career coming out soon, Drew recently invited long-time friends, (and Beyond the Marquee founders) Steve Czarnecki and Jon Donahue, over to his studio to chat about his career and much more.

In Part One of our Two Part Exclusive interview with Drew Struzan, we hear from Drew himself about his life after retirement, new side projects he’s undertaking, his thoughts on the new documentary … and if he officially clears up rumors about his involvement with the new Star Wars movie!

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL (Film Review)

Disney returns to Oz. Again.

Opening this weekend is Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful.  Is it great?  Is it powerful?  For the most part yes.  The part that isn’t, however, is pretty significant.

You’d think that the Broadway musical Wicked would’ve already covered everything there is about the formative years of the Land of Oz, but there’s more to mine in this fantasy world.   Wicked focused on the witches.  Oz focuses on the wizard, a womanizing con man mistaken for a real wizard prophesied to save the good citizens of Oz from evil.

I became aware of this screenplay over a year ago and loved it.  At the time Robert Downey Jr. was rumored to play Oscar “Oz” Diggs and, while learning more about the script, it was hard for me to picture anyone else in the role.  After seeing the movie, it’s still hard to picture anyone else.  More on that later.

MARQUEE MAMA reviews OZ The Great and Powerful

Creating the story for this movie could be the most ambitious undertaking in the film industry.  Personally, I think the notion alone dwarfs the efforts of making “Titanic”!  I mean, who hasn’t imagined what happened before The Wizard of Oz?  Who hasn’t pondered the path the wizard took to get to Emerald City?  Or dreamed of the ways those witches became good and evil?  In life, reality rarely lives up to the fantasy, and in “Oz The Great and Powerful”, the same is true. VOTE for “Hoverboard” a Great BACK TO THE FUTURE Themed PBS Film Festival Entry

It’s always nice when filmmakers drop us a line here at Beyond the Marquee, and yesterday we heard from our good pal Bob Gale, co-creator, co-writer, and co-producer of the Back to the Future film trilogy. Bob forwarded us a link he thought our BTM readers would truly enjoy – a short fiction film that’s part of this year’s PBS Online Film Festival called Hoverboard, about an imaginative young girl and her teddy bear who go on a quest to travel in time after watching Back to the Future Part II. If one thing is obvious, it’s that almost 30 years later, Back to the Future continues to inspire the imaginations of its fans both young and old. Take a look and then cast your vote by visiting http://www.pbs.org/filmfestival/vote/.  The PBS Online Film Festival is presented by Vision Maker Media (http://www.nativetelecom.org/). Let us know what you think of the Hoverboard Film Festival entry in the comments below. And if you happened to miss our own Hoverboard adventures with Bob Gale, check out this Beyond the Marquee episode of our hit web-series.

NOTE: Beyond the Marquee has already been placed on the advance VIP list by Bob Gale for a special Back to the Future event coming to Universal Studios Hollywood later this year, details right now are unavailable as the event is in it’s infancy, but we’ll keep you updated as soon as we can on it’s development.
